Post subject:  DIY EGR Valve Change?

My CRD is out of warranty and I need to replace my EGR valve (DTC P0401). I have purchased the valve but have now realized how difficult to reach the EGR Valve location is. Can anyone provide some tips or point me to a previous post about how to easily reach and change the EGR valve without a lift (i do have the alldata instructions). As it stands right now I am thinking I might have to have a mechanic do this one.......

Thoughts?

Pete

The problem could be the EGR flow control valve as it throws the same code. I believe it is easier to change but cost more, also are you sure you are out of warranty? How many miles do you have my dealer said they were covered for eithor 70k o 100k I forget, should get it in writing. Secondly this is a common problem did you call DCX and ask them to cover it as they know it is a high failutre item?

Popular Mechanics did a long term test on a CRD and had EGR issues when they happened the second time for them they replaced the EGR flow control valve. They were told by DCX that the EGR valve probable wasn't bad the first time and it was the EGR flow control that was bad. Note if when you shut off your engine there is a little bit of run on or dieslling as we called it on gas engines the flow control valve is going because one of its functions is to close whe you shut it off.

I think you should be able to coerce DCX into fixing yours.

The EGR Flow control valve is much easier to change and can be done from topside, but kjfishman's words are wise.

It has 40K miles and I did replace the EGR flow control valve already (it was bad anyway - made the buzzing noise)......I still have the P0401 DTC being thrown.

When I asked a tec how he did it, he said he had to pull the front driveshaft and starter to get at it.

EGR flow control valve can be replaced from topside

EGR has to be replaced from bottom side per Danno's description.

Thanks to you both! If anyone else has specific tricks or suggestions to make it easier let me know!

Sorry you're out of warranty. Good luck with the EGR replacement.

For all you others, get on down to your 5-star dealership and wrangle yourselves a Wynn's extended warranty. I got mine at nearly 30,000 miles (but 100% documented dealer service, warranty, and such) for a mere $1400, covers out to 100,000 mile on odometer (I lost 30,000) and another 4 years!

Considering the price of an EGR or EGR Flow Control Valve (expected to go up in price once more CRDs get out of warranty), not to mention the other thousands of Bumper-to-Bumper possibilities, it was money well spent for me.

EGR is a emission part should be covered under the 8YR/80k Federal Emmision warranty.

Can anyone else verify if this is true? I know it will make a big difference in whether many of us purchase an extended warranty.

Totally unrelated, but terribly funny (to me, at least)

If you drove your Kubota at the average highway speed many of us drive our CRDs of 70 mph, you'd have more miles on that than your CRD.

I asked the tech the other day about replacing the EGR and he said you remove the fuel filter and mount then you have easy access to remove EGR FCV or even the the EGR, he also said when he disconnected the battery he removed it from the vehicle and he had all the room needed to service either unit. I did see them do that when they replaced my EGR FCV back when.

The tech says he has replaced two EGR's on the CRD's in last two weeks. Only EGR's or EGR FCV's that haven't been replaced on CRD's they have sold is mine (had the FCV replaced, but not EGR) and a friend of mine who I showed how to do the EHM week after he bought it. He is now at 33,000 plus miles and averaging steady 32/33 mpg highway and has had no tranny problems, but had the TSB done as soon as it came out at dealer. He is a service writer for dealer and drives 100 miles a day to and from work in the CRD and he also uses it for any traveling as his other car is a gas hog.

Found this, if current, bad news for us.

You have the same basic statement in the emissions section of your warranty book. DC states that they extended the 2yr/24K mile Federal Emissions Warranty to 3yr/36K under their basic bumper to bumper warranty out of their own generosity. They also itemized the EGR valve as a 3/36 item.
