Hi everyone,

Long time reader, first time poster...

I have an 05 liberty sport CRD with just over 21,000kms (about 13,000 miles). I've changed the oil at the manual's recommended 5,000km (3,100 mile) interval, serviced by the selling dealer, always with synthetic 5w50 oil. Our 2nd last oil change was in early July. Right after that we headed out for vacation through the Canadian rockies, totalling about 6,00kms (3,700 miles). When we returned this week, we took the liberty back to the dealer for service. The problems start here. They billed us for an oil filter # 05003558-AA, but discovered after they sent us home, that they put on a filter # 0FE00215, a filter for the 3.7L gas engine. They called us to let us know that the wrong filter was on the vehicle, and not to drive it. They would tow it in, and put the correct filter on. We then started looking through our previous invoices and discovered that they also put on (and invoiced us for) the 0FE00215 filter when we came in for service in July. Basically we took our CRD on a 3,000 mile road trip w/the wrong oil filter! Now the dealer is telling us that that's just fine and there will be no lasting damage from their error. I feel like they're attempting to cover their mistake, and somewhat limit their liability. My question to you good people is, do you think there is reason for concern? The filter size, threads, and gasket are the same, so they do both fit the CRD, but there are components in the diesel filter that are not in the gas one. My thoughts are that if the filters were interchangable, why design a new filter for the CRD? Certainly there must be a difference between filters. Will this error cause any damage?

Any thoughts / opinions on this would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I'll take a stab at it, wix shows the same filter for both engines.

Yes, I see that. Yet the other filter makers (Mopar, Purolator, etc.) have 2 different part numbers for the gas / diesel engines. People here on the forum seem to like the Wix filters so maybe there is little to worry about.

Very intereting.

Thanks for the info.

I would guess that the diesel filter has a greater filtration capacity than the gas engine filter, because the diesel engine may, in the right circumstances, go as long as 12,000 miles between oil changes. Since you are changing at about 3,000 miles, I doubt you approach the capacity of either the gas or diesel filter, and I doubt anything has been damaged by using the wrong filter. Wix likely builds their filter to the higher diesel specification.

OK, first of all - do you have an incorrect user manual??? Here in the US the oil change intervals are every 6,250 or 12,500 miles depending on schedule B or schedule A driving characteristics. Second of all, do you really use 5w50 oil????? I'd like to see a scanned copy of these pages from your user manual. I'm assuming your from Canada since you mention the Canadian Rockies.....

Hey Alljeep I seem to remember that there are several brands of 5/50 synthetic oil that is warranty compliant with the proper service ratings, most not sold in US for various reasons.

The service manual isn't in front of me right now, but I am going to double check it. Is there a problem with my current service intervals or my choice of 5w50 synthetic oil???? The oil meets all manufacturers specs pertaining to the crd.

BTW, do you have any thoughts on the filter question?

As far as the filter question goes it should not have caused any problems with that low mileage of changes (3000 miles) but if it does and you have the records of the wrong filters being used I would remind them of that and have them make entry note on the vehicle computer records should you have a problem. I don't think you will though. Normal service interval is 6500 miles/10,000 Kilometers for the diesel, and if the dealer is not used to servicing diesels with their longer oil change intervals they will be treating you Jeep like a gasser. I would find a dealer that sells and services Sprinter and the Dodge diesel trucks if possible.

As for the oil the 5w-50 oil if it meet the spec for the CRD then you are in fine shape. I would have no problem using it in my CRD if it was available here, I wish we had the choice of more oils here to use.

It seems as if they've documented their own foul up with your invoices.

I would guess your engine is fine. The CRD filter is different than the 3.7 filter, but how it is different is anyone's guess. I haven't been able to find particulate capacities, by-pass valve opening psi's or flow readings on either of these filters. I would guess the biggest difference is the filter capacity on the crd filter would be much greater. Only 3,000 miles.... you should be fine but keep your records just in case.

If I remember correctly, several months ago on another oil thread, someone with an '06 mentioned that the '06 owners manual did state that one of the recommended oil weights was 5W50, a change from '05.

I was looking for a filter yesterday and stopped at the local parts store that sells WIX. I asked if they had a filter specifically for the CRD yet and the parts guy looked up the number, then he crossreferenced the number with the list of vehicles that it fits. He said it fits all kinds of vehicles, the gas Liberty, the Ford Escort, the F150, even some gas engines on air compressors, his opinion was that it is not designed specifically for the CRD and he would not recommend it.
