3rd party. Garrett, which makes turbos for numerous applications including big diesels. |

Funny thing today at the dealer, I was talking to a Chrysler factory sales rep and the guy was in late 50's or early 60's and was very negative toward diesels. He said people in the US would never put up with the noisey and dirty things like the Europeans, and that we had seen the last of the diesels with the Liberty CRD because they can't meet polutions standards. I jumped right in with both feet and ripped him a new stupid about product knowledge, and ask him had he heard about the Bluetec MB V6 diesel. Yes he had, but he said it was much more advanced and required special fuel, and that is where I laid into him. I explained that the two engines can run on the same fuel, have the same turbo, same injectors, same glow plugs, same type fuel pump, CCV, EGR and that the only difference is the electronic's, particulate filter in the exhuast, and catalyst fluid and those three thing could easly be added. When I asked about the Chrysler use of the VW diesel, The bozo told me he had never heard of D/C (Chrysler) buying VW engines for use in small Chrysler cars in Europe and or maybe in the US, and give me a stupid look. At that point I asked him if he read any of the corperate materials, or D/C websites or what D/C exec's announce at auto shows. Deer in head light look was all I got at that point. Then I told him the reason for people not buying diesels in the US is people like him are always telling people that 30 years ago GM built some crappy diesels durring a "energy crisis" and we Americans (D/C) can't do any better 30 years later. I ask if I should call Dr Z and tell him about his sorry exective staff that don't know stinky poo about a prodct they sell, he got a little red faced. I was in front of the GM office when this was all said and he did come to the guys rescue with a smile towards me, I guess he had overheard the verbal exchange. |

Makes you wonder what marketing propaganda is being taught by DCX to these lemmings. Armed with verbal "bovine excrement" such as this, they can then blur the disctintion between facts to the ignorant masses who come to purchase the DCX products. I say "good form" OLDNAVY, some people just need a tongue lashing before they can reason. |

I don't buy that crap about americans won't buy diesels. In fact I took a group of people at work for a ride in my new CRD and they could not belive it was a diesel. (The smell and smoke weren't there) Diesel Tech today is amazing. With a turbo all the power is there and in many ways the newer diesel engines like the Cummings and the CRD run circles around there gas counter parts. Plus diesels will run on used veg oil. My MB 240D runs great on it. |

Put a diesel car together with the nonsense I've seen on this Jeep, you may sell alot in quickly but you won't have customers very long. It's individuals like Old Navy came across inside a company that are the reason why this product is falling apart on Jeep. They will kill a good thing before it has a chance to reach it's potential. |

Dealers only care that their sales weenies move volume. The sales weenies assume nobody else knows squat about cars and us consumers should feel grateful for whatever they choose for us. The sales weenies I met when shopping for a CRD knew less about the models and options than I did. On one CRD test drive the sales weenie had a checklist of crap to spew about the CRD -- nearly all of it wrong. He finally shut up after I corrected him for the eigth time. |

The sad thing is that this is pretty much true ablout sales and and a lot of times includes the service staff. When I bought our CRD the salesman did not even attempt to explain anything about the diesel and stuck with the basic info about the Jeep, probably because we were trading in a diesel VW.
But then I have seen the same thing here on this forum where it concerns the CRD and why they quite selling the CRD. People seem to think that it would be impossible to make the VM meet '07 EPA requirements and that is why they dropped the CRD engine. I still say it was engine supply to start with, because most dealers were asking for them instead of gassers by time '06 models came out. I still think we will see the CRD back for '07 UNLESS: 1. they consider it too costly to add the special exhuast system (particulate filters) or 2. current underbody design does not have the room for the system. I think that one or both of those reasons would kill the CRD in Liberty, because the Liberty is a basic low buget SUV. Adding a $700 extra exhuast system for 2 years then the additional $1000 for AddBlue system for '09 EPA may be looked on as bad investement in what is a a slow selling vehicle in gas or diesel bought mainly by women, compared to say a diesel light duty 1/2 ton PU truck like the Dakota or Ram 1500 series that has more proffit and mostly male buyers. The Dakota is mainly bought for price and ecomony of operation an yet has a good proffit margine and would have a big sales following with a 2WD diesel and 30 mpg EPA rating. A diesel option the same price as the V8 in a Dakota would sell as fast as they could build them and still give about the same proffit margine as the V8 engine option and same goes for the Ram full sized truck. |

cycle the glowplugs 5-6 times, crankover engine, restart everytime it stalls, once it stays running on its own let it idle for 10-15 minutes then drive away in a big cloud of smoke. |

Obviously paraphrased from the 1980 Oldsmobile Diesel Owner's Manual |

It's a shame what GM did to diesels back in the early 80's. There was one day back in the mid-90's when the temp hit -20 and my little Jetty didn't start. Funny thing is, most gassers didn't start that day either. |

Obviously paraphrased from the 1980 Oldsmobile Diesel Owner's Manual My 79 Olds would start on the first try and continue to run at 8 below without the block heater. The revised 5.7's weren't bad engines, particularly if you added an electric fuel pump and a water separator. They had absolutely no tolerance for being run low on coolant though. |

I do hate to see the misinformed trash the 5.7L diesel. I may be the exception but mine went 235K miles before I pulled it. What I thought was a bad FI pump eventually turned out to be an unvented fuel cap. I was sick after doing a gas conversion over a bad diagnosis. Funny how some of the mods and issues discussed on this forum (cooling capacity, motor oil grade, EHM, and extra filters) are what I went through to get my 5.7 dialed-in. Mine had a double EHM. |

Never did the EHM to mine. No EGR on the 79 so the engine oil didn't have soot to act as a binder in the intake. My Nissans are what really taught me about EGR soot and oil clogging the intake. |
