Post subject:  Emissions Recall F31

Just got this recall notice in the mail yesterday... has anybody seen/heard of this? What does it fix? I have noticed that the CRD does not report fuel consumption to aftermarket scan tools... will this fix this problem or is it unrelated?

Text:

<i>
<b>EMISSIONS RECALL F31 - REPORGRAM TCM FOR AFTERMARKET SCAN TOOL</b>

Dear <blahblahblah>

DaimlerChrysler has determined that some 2006 Jeep Liberty vehicles equipped with a diesel engine may have an improperty functioning on-board diagnostic system that does not comply with Federal regulations. This recall also involves a small number of 2005 and 2006 model year Jeep Liberty vehicles that had the transmission control module software updated as a service repair

<B>The problem is...</b> The Transmission Control Module (TCM) on your vehicle (VIN:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) was inadvertently programmed with software that may prevent proper communication with some aftermarket scan tools.

<b>What your dealer will do...</b> <b>DaimlerChrysler will repair your vehicle free of charge (parts and labor)</b>. To do this, your dealer will reprogram your vehicle's TCM with new software. The work will take about an hour to complete. However, additional time may be necessary depending on how dealer appointments are scheduled and processed.

<B>What you must do...</b> Simply <B>contact your dealer</b> right away to schedule a service appointment. Ask the dealer to hold the part for your vehicle or to order it before your appointment.

<b>If you need help...</b> If you have questions or concerns which your dealer is unable to resolve, please contact DaimlerChrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

Please help..... blah blah blah blah blah
</i>

TIA,

-pf

Yep, this has already been out for close to a month now.

One or more of their TSB reflashes buggered the software such that it won't talk to the scan tools they use at state vehicle inspection stations. If they can't check the computer for emissions data, the vehicle fails inspection.

That's why it's an emissions recall. Basically, DC has ended up programming the vehicles such that they're in violation of federal law - ie, they've pissed off the EPA.

As we used to say in grade school, "Smooth move, Ex-Lax".

I was just wondering, that if I get a recall, should I get it done? My CRD is running perfectly, with no problems. I also live in a county in Missouri where there are no emission inspections. Thoughts please... Thanks. :?:

I think this also fixes a problem scanning trouble codes.

Depending on when your Libby was "concieved" you may be getting a LBJ recall in September. I'm going to wait and do them both at the same time

I was as well, except the recall notice for the scan tool has some nasty writting that if I ignore it they will invalidate the vehicles warranty, so they get the car today and again soon.

So what's the LBJ Recall you refer to Joe?

Had the F31 done without trouble and the dragging shift at 35 mph is gone, tech and I did test drive and it light up the tires leaving the lot. He says this is his favorite test drives other then SRT 4, SRT8, and SRT0 car's.

When you had the F31 recall done, did they perform the entire 18-023-06 update or just the TCM software? Wondering if the ECM software portion of 18-023-06 is any different than 18-009-06???

Probably have to have mine done. When it threw the initial code for the MAF sensor, as part of the EGR going south, guy at Advance had no problem reading the codes.

As part of replacing the EGR, and what the tech felt was a misfire at speed, they performed a reflash (late June). A week or so later, when the first glow plug went bad, the Advance attendant had to try four times before he could pull up even a generic code, kept getting "cannot establish data link" on the display. Same store, same scanner, same attendant.

My inspection is due in Sept. I'm thinking a wise move would be to take it to the dealer for the state inspection, tell them I'm having problems pulling DTC codes as well. If they have problems connecting to it during the inspection, then they can perform the recall at the same time.

I had TCM# 56044737AJ and that is what is on the sticker.

I had the 7.14 TSB done and the recall last Friday. I will snap a picture of the sticker they put on and insert it here as soon as I can.

just picked up the crd, they only did an oil change, they couldn't get the crd to take the F31 recall flash so just didn't do it. I suggested they call STAR and see what should be done, they couldn't be bothered. Oh well, I have the paperwork that I brought the vehicle in for the recall but the dealer decided not to do it. To think I never knew that recalls were an option for the dealers

Oh yeah, this is a 5 star dealer...

I would bet they couldn't get a data link with the TCM. The first reflash done on mine required the replacement of the TCM to make it work.

If you really want to see these guys jump, call up the state DMV and regional EPA office and tell them your dealer declined to perform a federal emissions recall on your vehicle. After those guys are done with them, I'd bet they're singing a different tune (and most likely a few octaves higher).

There's a phone number "if you need help" on the recall notice 1-800-853-1403

I told them that some were reporting exactly that, a TCM replacement may work, they made a comment about it being a STAR restricted part and it must be the computer on the dealers end that has the problem. Personally, I couldn't care. There is no emissions testing where I live anyhow and if the newest flash makes the TC last longer I don't really want it to, I KNOW it (TC)will crap out, I just want it to happen while under warranty. From my point I can't get any backlash on the warranty end because I have the paperwork saying I did bring the vehicle in for the F31 recall and I otherwise don't care about the recall.

Others have suggested to call the number on the TSB or the EPA and make a stink, I'd rather make a stink about something that will cost me serious money down the road (TC and Tranny/pump) than something like this that has no real effect on me.

I'm sure someone has reponsibility to track recall data at DC (I know my company does when we do them!!), my VIN will show up as a big red flag, at first they will blame me, possibly send a letter to remind me of my responsibility to get it done quoting the warranty aspect of the orginal recall notice(which I have only seen online when I enter my VIN, I never did get an actual letter or notice) then I fax them my paperwork from today and they will shut up and beg me to bring it in so it can be done right. At that point I be an ahole for my amusement... :D

I just got my letter yesterday, guess I have to take it in now.

What if your TC does last throughout the warranty? And then goes belly up.

You know the answer to that one! That's why you were smart and got the extended warranty (at least I think you said so in another thread) :D

Knew I should of played hard ball to get that extended warranty.... :(
