It says it will boost Cetane 4 - 6 numbers based how you mix it. Anyone with experience?

I've used either that or their other stuff in the white bottle, can't remember. Seemed to run a bit quiter. I've only ran it in the D2 though. |

Probably one of the best "Bang for the Buck" additives for our diesels. I usually mix 5oz per 15 gallons (adds about .08/gallon) and have been very happy with it. If I get 2.5% better mileage out of it, I break even. The "SlickDiesel" is reported to be BioDiesel by some and that is a good thing IMHO. Truckers and other diesel owners have been using PS for a while and it is easy to find at retail outlets. Of course it also cleans/keeps clean the injectors, lubricates the internals, raises the cetane (makes it ignite easier). reduces emmisions a bit and stabilizes the diesel. For the price, it is cheap insurance! The PS in the white bottle is for cold climate diesels. |

I agree it's good stuff. However, it is not fuel stabilizer. The chemical that enhances the cetane makes the fuel less stable, especially if the fuel gets warm. It's no problem if you add PowerService to your vehicle tank. I would not use it in a fuel storage tank, especially if the tank sits in the sun (making it warm). |

OK, maybe I should be more specific. It is a fuel stabilizer...meaning it protects against microbial growth if fuel sits around for a prolonged amount of time. It also prevents thermal breakdown of diesel. The Cetane makes it more volatile...ignites easier. If that is what you mean by less stable then I can see your position. The Cetane works the opposite of Octane boosters which make the gas less prone to ignition. |

Fuel additives such as PowerService will actually shorten the shelf life of diesel. The cetane enhancer is a chemical that initiates free radical chemical reactions. Other products like Sta-Bil and PRI-D contain free radical reaction inhibitors and increase the shelf life of diesel. All fuel treatments are not the same. I add PowerService to my vehicle tank when I fill it up. It's a bad idea to add it a storage tank where the fuel will stay for a matter of 6 months or so, especially if the tank sits in the sun and gets warm. Chevron, I think, has a document that discusses fuel treatments in some detail. Let me know if you would like me to post a link to it and I'll try to dig it up. |

I've been running a mixture of the silver PS and MMO since I run it in my CTD. |

It is a fuel stabilizer . I am sure that this thread was alluding to fuel in tank and not long term storage, although it states on the bottle and on the website that is does help for long term storage. |

The more I've heard of ULSD the more I hear of additives.... Basically because of my powerstroke I've found some very good cetane boosters as well as conditioners... Stanadyne is an all in one product that adds cetane as well as conditioner/lubricity improvers... Amsoil has a two product system with stand alone cetane booster and conditioner/lubricity improvers... Both products are alcohol free which is very important in a diesel engine... Also, both products have a very good reputation... You can Google the names to get more information and where to buy them... Ken.... |

Power Service and other treatments that enhance cetane and improve lubricity are fuel treatments/additives/enhancers. Fuel stabilizers are used specifically for applications where the fuel will sit unused for a significant period of time. Mostly in marine applications, or for equipment that will not be used during the winter months. Adding a fuel stabilizer is typically associated with winterizing or preparing the equipment for storage until spring arrives. As another poster pointed out, there are differences between stabilizers and enhancers. In general, PS enhances the quality of the fuel and a product like Stabil will preserve the quality of the fuel when stored. |

darn people...read the back of the bottle...it has fuel stabilizers in it. Go to the PS website...in the marine section...more info. Just because something has a cetane booster does not mean it can't have fuel stabilizer additives also. |

Yeah I tend to not believe what people "claim" about their products until I see it proven. Powerservice has a good rep to me so I will give them the benefit of the doubt for now. |

It does say that it has fuel stabilizers in it, and it does say "stabilizes stored fuel", but those are general statements that give no indication as to how long it will stabilize said fuel. Further, the product is not marketed as a fuel stabilizer but rather as a fuel system cleaner and cetane booster. Heck, most diesel fuel has anti-inhibitors in it to prevent it from breaking down for short periods of time (like a few months). If I were storing fuel, I would use a fuel stabilizer that is marketed primarily for that purpose and is designed to stabilize the fuel for longer than a few months. Lastly, I wasn't trying to down powerservice as I feel it is a great product...but I was simply trying to point out the difference between a stabilizer and an enhancing additive. |

I agree. It is good stuff, and I use it. I just make sure I use it correctly. There is no way around the fact that cetane enhancing compounds shorten the shelf life of diesel. |
