Post subject:  Brake noise almost every morning

Had Jeep into dealer for this at about 200 miles. They gave me the song and dance that all the Liberty's do this because of the moisture and rust that form on the rotors. Then they proceeded to sand the rotors lightly with sand paper and told me this should help with the noise. How this would help with rust forming on the rotors is beyond me, and to my surprise, it didn't. I now have around 10K on it and it seems to be getting worse, and sometimes it will make the groaning noise during the day after a short stop while running errands. Has anyone pushed for, or have received new rotors and pads under warranty? I think I might have a warped or out of round rotor because the noise is not a constant moan, its like it only hits a small area of the rotor. Thanks for the info.

My rotors did the same thing when I first picked up my CRD and my dealer also said the exact same thing to the letter. My dealer resurfaced my rotors, and then put new brake pads on and then the problem went away (FOR 2 DAYS!). I just kept driving it for a couple of weeks and it finally stopped and I have not had any problem for the last 10000 or so miles. I know my solution doesn't really offer a fix but so many people I know that have Libbys have had this problem and never really had it fixed it just went away.

I have read where you can get them replaced if you complain forcefully. More likely they will cut the old rotors (resurface) decreasing their usable life. If you want this done, you must act before 12K miles to get brake work covered under warranty.

You probably have a surface contact problem with the rear pads due to rust build-up on the rotors. Your normal driving/braking activity is not sufficient to clear away the rust. You might try a trick to knock the rust off of the rear rotors, try dragging the rear brakes with the hand (emergency brake) control. This should improve the surface contact of the rear pads. And yes, they will grind like mad until the rust is gone.

Print it out and bring it in to your dealer.

My car was doing something different. It was vibrating at highway speeds and pulsating when the brakes were applied at higher speeds (above 45mph). I took it in for that, F31 recall, and TSB 18-023-06..and they replaced both front rotors. The vehicle is much smoother now.

Take it back to the dealer...most new rotors can only be turned or resurfaced once and remain within spec...so if you take it back they can't do it again so they will have to replace them. Most shops will resurface for pulsating...but it only solves the problem for a short time...and then it returns and the rotors have to be replaced. They know this, and this allows them to get paid for both jobs. If they replaced the rotors right away...they would loose the money they get for the resurfacing. Sad but true.

Thanks for the info from the Chrysler site! My brakes have been playing the same tune. I just thought it was because I'm in the mountains with the mud and crud and they were dirty. Looks like I'm going to be spending some time in my dealer's waiting room!

Yeah, notice the part on page two where it says only to replace the rotor if it is no longer in specification. What cheapskates.
