So here is the deal, I test drove this today (you can read my review on the "Wrangler 4x4 Discussion" Section in the JK thread. It was awesome, but to me, nothing like our CRD KJ:
Then, since I'm a CJ freak (expecially the ultra rare CJ-6 as I've owned 2 of in the past), I scan the for sale adds every day (probably for the last 10 years). Well, a 1974 or '75 CJ-6 pops up with the factory 304 V-8, HD T-15 3-spd transmission, Stock D44 rear, great body, NO oil leaks of any kind, great clutch, top, everything works - all electrical, everything for only $900 - that's right, 900 bucks!!! (I know, I know - probably needed bearings, breaks, all kinds of CJ stuff that pops up and blows project costs sky high, but- never scared me before). This was the first day it was for sale. I got to it first, sold 3 hours after I saw it...
I passed it up as I'd rather just wheel my KJ now and put the money in mods. What's happened to me??? I used to be this huge CJ and Wrangler freak and I just passed up the cheap jeep deal of a lifetime??? I'm not used to being so happy with just one vehicle.... Some one give me a sleeping pill... Maybe I'm just too old and broken to maintain a third vehicle, but really, the CRD KJ, as a package, is so amazing that it has ruined everything else for me Anyone else in here have this problem? Or, is it a problem? |

If you find any more of those bargaiins, let me know... my wife would kill me, but I should be able to hide it in the forest behind the house for a few months... |

It's the DIESEL...hard to go back to less torque and bad mileage...darn near impossible...you would feel like an idiot pulling into a gas station twice as often...and would have terrible nightmares... |

Another thing is going 60mph, hitting the OD button and watching the big cloud of smoke behind you as you pull away. Happened to me tonight and before I knew it, I was gong 85mph. Awesome! |

I bought my CRD because DC in it's infinite wisdom didn't build a 4dr, Unlimited Rubicon, with a diesel. I want one but I won't buy one until it has a DIESEL. |

I have developed a fierce allegiance to the CRD. No H3, FJ or Rover even comes close. The irritation about the CRD is with DCX, and the way it's deciding or not deciding how to stand by their product under warranty issues. The only way I would think dumping it is if the new JK came with a Diesel with a MB manual transmission. I spend more time on mods, tools and garage time than with any other vehicle I owned. |

Is it just me or the camera angle? Looks like that old CJ is sagging in the middle. I probably don't appreciate a 30 yr old Jeep as much as you. Just see it as a money pit. |

Ugh. You're a good one. I would have left with the Wrangler. |

I can also attest to being spoiled by the torque of the CRD. I test drove a Subaru wagon earlier this year, and when I put my right foot down to merge onto the highway all I could think was "No way, I cannot deal with the lack of OOmph!" Here is hoping that the CRD gets all of its bugs worked out under warranty. I would love to keep it for a long time, but dont want to be dogged by EGR and transmission problems into infinity. |

Yep LOVE MY CRD.. Hardly ever drive my Lifted, armored, YJ anymore... And want to MOD my CRD.. Yet I feel I need to get out of Warranty before I do.. And YEP... I sure do not want to be plagued with EGR, Tranny issues forever... |

Almost glad my '06 CRD has a shorter warranty than the '05 for that reason. As soon as it is out of warranty, I am choking off the EGR channels with a flat plate and to hell with the resulting code. At least it won't be stuck open and screwing up things. Already got the schematics from the my local dealer on the layout. The tranny is another issue that I may have to deal with, at least until someone develops an easy method for modifying the software in the TCM. That is the good thing about semi's, the owner can set all kinds of variables to his liking in the PCM. |

You haven't by chance tried to plug your CRD into a Prolink reader at work?? When I first saw this engine in 1999 on the test dyno at Detroit Diesel, I would swear they were running it on basic DDEC IV software. They even commented that they adapted the DDEC software to control the Bosch injectors for the double pulse. I would bet that a Series 50/60 cartridge would access the ECM. |

If you do block it, try opening up the egr port on the intake tube to fresh air (using a small air filter) and see if the code ever sets again... The Bosch controller is checking the MAF for corresponding voltage change showing a reduction in flow rate right after activating the EGR line. They also turn down the VGT vanes to minimal boost while EGR is on to keep boost from blowing the egr gas right back into the exhaust. If the egr port to the intake tube is opened to fresh air not from the MAF measure airbox, and the egr is blocked off at the egr valve input, then when the egr is turned on, the egr valve will open, no exhaust will flow, but the MAF will see lower flow as the egr fcv valve will close down, and more fresh air will be pulled from the newly available fresh air source... This is all theory of course. I have never modified any emissions control device... This theory is a suggested workaround for getting home if your egr should fail while on a long trip. If your egr fails open, the resulting heavy black smoke will far exceed any pollution that total lack of egr will cause. You would be far less polluting with disabled egr than with failed wide open egr. Once safely home you should immediately restore all egr functionality asap. |

a CRD wrangler is on the way, maybe for '08? I have seen the DCX engineers driving them around the DCX campus, passed one on squirrel rd (for those that know where that is) and sure enough it had a CRD badge and manufacture plates |

These are also sold as export models. The JK is also offered as a CRD outside of the US. I'll believe it when the announcement is made, but so far no one can confirm that the CRD will be sold in the JK for North American consumption |

It would have to have the Mercedes BlueTec SCR urea and NOx catalyst after treatment on it to pass the EPA diesel chokepoint. Assuming that the emissions equipment added no more than $2500 to the cost of the vehicle, and assuming the EPA ever does allow SCR diesel treatment, it might happen around 2010. DC might have to put SCR BlueTec on every diesel Jeep they make just to make up for the loss of the CARB state sales. |

The current plan is for the Wrangler to have the same 2.8L CRD and the 545RFE tranny for the export model. If the 2.8 in the Liberty does not meet the EPA requirements I doubt that it will in the Wrangler. I am going to wait about a year to see if it looks like a diesel will be offered in the US and then I probably but a 4 dr gas if a diesel is not offered. I am not however going to get rid of the Liberty CRD, we are keeping it, The wrangler will be replacing our Buick. |

No, it wouldn't if installed with the same emissions equipment as the 06 CRD. The SCR urea treatment is all after the engine, in the exhaust stream. The NOx requirement is what changed dramatically for 07 diesel emissions requirements and beyond. The SCR urea treatment converts the NOx to water and nitrogen. No reason the CRD wouldn't meet the emissions if it was fitted with that system. DC might not want to just to keep that system tied to their premium Mercedes engines, but with the non SCR BlueTec Mercedes diesels failing the 07 emissions by 1/100 of a gram of NOx, they may have to in order to amortize the emissions system across enough vehicles in non CARB states. That 1/100 of a gram just cost them a huge number of potential diesel sales in those 5 states. If it forces DC to add BlueTec to the CRD engine, CARB might have done the rest of us a favor with their dogged determinedness to restrict diesel sales. If the SCR urea after treatement can clean diesel emissions up enough to eliminate EGR completely they really would have done us a favor, in spite of their best efforts. |
