Post subject:  Delay shifting into Drive when cold

We are noticing that in the morning, after reversing down the driveway, there is a disturbing delay in the Drive engaging, which can be extra scary if you have already put some gas on when the gear engages... Mainly my wife drives the CRD (ask OldNavy how that feels), but I did have it happen to me once or twice now, so I know it happens even when unlead-footed people drive it.

Just got i back from the dealer after the whole egr thing, but they didn't do any tranny TSB's (nothing on the reciept and no new sticker on the ECM). There has never been a flash update since we bought it new in July 05 (though there is one sticker from a factory update). We're at 17k mi now

Is it time for a Flash, or is this one of the other dreaded tranny issues, possibly that filter? It just doesn't seem to fit the description.

it's the two filter tsb i would guess. Does your tranny fall in the range?

Been through this with mine, including the arguments with the dealer & DC. Your tranny filters are likely defective. Start by looking at TSB's for your jeep, listed on alldata. You will probably have to download and print to either shove in the dealer's face (or up their stupid) to get them done. Follow this link:
http://www.alldata.com/tsb/Chrysler/index-issue.html

You need to look at TSB 21-007-06 (tranny filters) and 18-023-06 (latest reflash). On TSB 21-007-06, see if you can duplicate the delayed engagement into reverse following extended parking. You need to be quick in the process, start the engine and immediately put in reverse. If it doesn't drop in gear immediately, you need to get the filters changed. Mine wouldn't do it parking overnight, took parking it for 2-3 days. Once the filter TSB was done, the delayed engagement from reverse to forward dissappeared too.

Thanks! And you are right RFCRD the usual overnight doesn't do it...usually a rare couple of days where it doesn't get used.

Of course, if I drive it to the dealer, it won't happen therebecause it is wamed up. I am thinking about video-taping everystart in hopes of catching it.

And thanks for the alldata link.

They only agreed to do the filter TSB as a resonable precaution because I complained about a number of chronic CRD issues (incl. frequency of tranny failure) in a demand letter and a face to face meeting with DC reps. Gave them little chioce but to respond/repair or I would lemon out of the Jeep (ie...nuclear option). They even reniged on doing it once after we met, took it back two weeks later and demanded it be done. Been fine eversince.

I would encourage anyone having mechanical problems with their CRD that are getting ignored by their dealer to write a demand letter, sent certified mail to the owner of the dealership. DC will get a copy in short order. A repair response will follow. No lawyer involved, cost me a whole $5 in postage. It works to clear the air and get repair service moving along.
