| Post subject: | Dynomax exhaust installed |
After weighing the pros and cons of the various exhaust mods, I decided on the Dynomax cat back system. I was going to cut out the original muffler but after looking at the stock tail pipe, I noticed a couple of kinks in it. Not bad but not mandrel bent either. The stock mounting flange behind the cat necks down to a tad over 2", more about this in a minute.. Here is a rundown of the system. It went in with no problems. The muffler used is their Ultra Flow Welded unit. It's not skid plate strong like a Flowmaster but it ain't half bad either. I'll give it a 7.5. It is a straight through design and if you believe their literature there is nothing that flows better. More than twice the flow of a Flowmaster. You can see from one end to the other, nothing to block the flow. The kit comes with a stub section that bolts to the factory flange. It does nothing to remove this choke point in the original system. The original system has a flex joint ahead of the cat and the constricted flange locks up tight so I'm thinking of getting a muffler shop to bend a short section of pipe and cut out the flange. It only needs about a 10-20 degree bend. The tailpipe section went in easily and lined up well. I sprayed the joints and welds with zinc paint then a coat of high heat paint. That should make the metal last about a week longer than it I did nothing. At least it will look good for a month or so. Install note: Tools- 15mm socket, low profile creeper(generously provided by Dynomax), jack and jack stands. That's it. I had to jack the back end up and put jack stands on the frame so the suspension would drop to get the old system out in one piece. It was very easy to get the old one out, no cutting needed. The factory slobbered grease on the rubber hangers so they came out easily. That may not be the case a couple of winters down the road. Install the stub section loosely, install the tailpipe section, wiggle the muffler in, snug up the clamps, push up on the system and tighten the bolts. Check for clearance and all of the hangers about in their original position. Done. How does it run? It idles so smooth for a second I thought it was a gas engine. When I mash on the peddle, I can't hear any difference from the old muffler. The engine is much smoother as the car accelerates. I can't say it's faster but it runs a lot smoother. I got the system from Summitracing.com for $230. |

For the price I don't think there is a much better system out there for the CRD. Diesel Power Magazine was doing a "Module" upgrade for the Liberty and added the Dynomax System before hand...It dynoed 4-5 more horsepower at the rear wheels...pretty good for a catback. |

Forgot one thing. The bends in the Dynomax are smoother than the bends in the stock system but not the best mandrel bends I've ever seen. I'll rate them a solid 7. |

What is the tailpipe diameter? is it the same as stock, or bigger? |

Slip fit and welded over the tailpipe so it's a tad bigger than stock, maybe 2 3/4" Not like a rice rocket megaphone, for sure. |

The problem with dynomax is life expectancy. If you live in an area that gets snow, expect it to last ~3 years. |

I fabbed in a dynomax muffler about 3 months ago and have been very satisfied with the results. Good muffler that really lets the exhaust flow. |
