Well, I finally popped the engine cover off my new CRD....1500 miles....in anticipation of attempting the EHM that seems to be a worthwile mod. Man, for a small engine, there isn't much room in here. Got the airbox cover off but can not figure out how to remove the box for access to the lower end of the EGR valve hose. I assume the EHM mod is done at the bottom of the hose where it attaches to the turbo base?

I did pull the hose off the EGR to see if any oil was present and there was a little but I don't know what is good bad or indifferant.

Oil is black but I expect that on a diesel. Level is about 1/16" to 1/8" below the full....cold. I had read that the dipstick is real inaccurate...is that correct.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Build date is 5/06 if that makes any differance.

most likely the dipstick is correct on the 2006, mine was an 05 and DC knew about it lat summer.

The dipstick on my 06 is accurate. After oil change and fill with specified 6.5 qts, oil shows full on dipstick.

The easiest way to do the EHM (you are referring to the "elephant hose mod" right?) is to do it on the top of the engine right underneath the engine cover. You probably could do it from the other end of the hose, but I don't know how it attaches to the intake and/or how you would cap the intake where they meet.

If you pull the enigine cover off, you will see a black circular "hockey puck" shaped deal. The hose that comes off of it towards the front bumper is the hose you want to pull. I bought a 3/4" PVC plumbing plug and plugged the existing hose and pushed it to the side. Then, take 3 or 4 feet of 3/4" hose (I used heater hose) and plug it onto the "hockey puck" and run it along the top of the engine and down the side, avoiding moving parts or the exhaust. Mine takes a fairly sharp left turn and then runs kind of in front of the coolant tank, and then down the passenger side. I used a long wire tie to strap it to the frame and keep it from the exhaust.

Hope that helps. This way should be way easier than pulling out the air box and doing it that way.

Need to check your terminology, the EGR doesn't have a hose attached. Do you mean Charged Air Cooling hose or Closed Crancase Vent hose?

You can lift out the entire airbox by pulling straight upward. It has 3 legs that rest in rubber body mounts. When you re-install, a little soap on the legs will help it into the mounts. Also the engine cover will come off the same way (4 rubber mounts).

If you are doing an EHM, best to disconnect the CCV hose where it attaches to the upper breather. Plug the end of the factory hose and leave in place. Run a new hose directly from the breather.

Your oil level is fine, best to let it ride and not attempt to top-off until it gets to MIN mark.

Got it.....terminology TSB update accepted.

Ran to the store to get the hose and plug and found I had a CEL light. I forgot to plug in the little plug at the top of the air hose so I stopped and corrected that little problem. CEL still on so I double checked the reinstallation of the engine cover and found I didn't get it setted on the rubber mounts and so the oil cap didn't tighten all the way...don't know if that would through a light or not but it didn't fix it so it must be something else. Unplugged and replugged the thing to the air inlet several time and that solved the CEL. Man, are these things sensitive to curious fingers.

I wish we could retrieve codes without a scanner.

Now to the EHM.

nice, mine with 6.4qts shows about 1/8" on the dipstick and well below the min mark...

Now the trans dipstick is another matter all together. The trans dipstick is so long, that it looks like they put two dipsticks together to make it.
