Post subject:  my first EGR CEL

well my CEL came on last night so i drove it to the dealer and i just got a call back from them saying it was the EGR valve. so apparently the CCV vent mod doesn't solve that problem just helps postpone it a bit. ohhh and on top of that i got a flat on the way over to the dealer.

How many miles?

By venting....do you mean the EHM? If so, I was under the impression that mod was to prevent problems in the other acronym.....for intercooler. Admittidly, I a little confused by all this stuff so I can easily be way off in my understanding.

yes its the elephant hose mod. i dont know what problems its supposed to prevent but any less oil getting back into the intake will help.

I don't believe it has anything to do with the EGR but others more knowedlable will help us out.

Reducing intake oiling by open venting or using a CCV filter (Provent) will have a positive effect on EGR performance by: 1). reducing soot production, 2). reducing oil/liquid contamination at the airflow control (anti-shudder) valve. The thing most owners don't realize is that open venting won't necessarily eliminate intake oiling. In fact, from my observations, the oil drawn from the CCV is small compared to what is getting past the turbo seals.

Sounds like you have been open venting for a significant time. Are your CAC hoses dry?

First time I took mine in the mechanic thought it was the EGR, but replacing it didn't solve the issue, they were stumped until I brought them the Popular Mechanics article. turned out that the actuator was stuck, I think stuck open, because they let me drive it home with the CEL light on. until they could get the parts. (parts backordered), if its stuck closed I think I read that you should not drive it extensively.

Anyway, it ended up being the same issue popular mechanics found. I think a lot of the EGR failures people have been seeing are really this actuator sticking. Print out the article and take it in with you. I had mine done at Schaumburg Jeep so they already are familiar with the issue.

So far 6000 miles and no other issues.

CAC hoses? you mean the pipes from the intercooler?

Yes Charged Air Cooler hoses.
There is one leading into the intercooler and one out of the intercooler.
If you look at the hose itself, it should have some numbers followed by the white letters CAC.
The only pipes I know are the ones that make up the exhaust :?

Yes. CAC=Charged Air Cooling (aka, intercooler).

Andy,

Did you get it fixed, what was the verdict?

Author:  Pablo [ Sat Sep 23, 2006 1:29 am ]
Post subject:  backordered

balljoints
glow plugs
egr
tranny pump
front diff
now this actuator...

Ummm... so what the heck is not backordered? Who makes these and where do they have to go to get the parts, the moon? Is there anything for the Liberty that is not backordered?

ya they fixed it the same day. apparently some dealer in chicago had a EGR. no problems as of yet and i just filled up on my first tank after having the recall done so hopefully there wont be a drop in MPG.
