Post subject:  CRD Value

Has anyone checked the trade-in value of these things lately? I decided a few weeks ago to sell mine, it's just way too small. Looked at edmonds and kbb, and the numbers were not too bad. For mine - a 06 Limited with just about everything on it and only 5300 miles, the Edmonds number for trade-in is $23500. OK, but the dealers have been telling me something completely different. The numbers I've gotten have ranged from 16500 - 19800 and no better. Anyone else seen anything similar? At this rate I guess I'll just keep squeezing stuff into this little bug.

I think it's worth the 23500 but the problem is that your going to have a hard time finding someone willing to spend 20+ grand to buy a private party car.

Dealers will almost always screw you on a trade in.

The Dealer quotes you a horribly low price, because they're going to turn around and sell it for much more. I think you'll usually get a better return on the vehicle value if you try to sell it yourself.

The value of my CRD is "You're gonna hafta pry it out of my cold, dead hands." I think a number of other CRD owners might think the same. In spite of the complaints about EGRs and torque converters I couldn't find many used CRDs for sale when I went shopping and ended up buying new.

CARMAX. And make sure it's clean, clean, clean, when they appraise it. I traded a 2004 Yukon when I bought my CRD. KBB and Edmunds valued it at about $22k, and the dealers were consistently offering $18 - 19k in trade, no more. Gave me a bunch of BS about no market for SUVs, they won't bring anything at the sale, etc. etc. When I went to a dealer with the $23k Carmax offer, they matched it. And that was after I already negotiated the bottom line price for the CRD. The dealers will screw you if you let them. And I think clean, clean, clean is what got me the extra $1,000.

Been there done that. Carmax quoted me 19000 for it, and believe me it is clean and spit shined. I've got it advertised in several places, so my plan has always been to sell it privately, I was just curious to see what the trade-in looked like.

Three books:

Blue - Retail Dealer Value & Retail Private Party Value
Red - Dealer Trade-in Value
Black - Wholesale used (to this day, most dealers deny this book even exists), it's even hard to find it on the net. It exsits. I've held one in my hands before the days of the internet and there is one web-site (of course, I can't remember it) that has it.

CarMaxx usually offers the median average between Black and Red. Dealerships that talk out of both sides of their mouth (I bet they aren't giving that bulls*t about the shrinking market for SUV's when someone wants to BUY one) are only going to offer Black so they can sell it for Blue.

As for a private party giving you the same amount that a dealership would charge for it, it is unlikely that they will - however - you can probably get within a thousand dollars of the dealers price if you keep it shined up, have the service records, if any, the manuals, both original keys, floor mats, etc ... so that the person buying it doesn't feel they are being short-changed on a "used" car that is so young. Also, if you are the first owner, the 7/70 powertrain can be transferred to the second owner if they call the 1-800 number in the warranty booklet and pay the fee.

I've sold many cars and got very close to the dealer price on most of them. Since the CRD is not being made anymore, you'll probably have an easy time getting your price, but will hve to be patient waiting for that person who REALLY wants one to come along and pay whatever price you're asking.

That CarMax deal is about the best deal your going to get. The highest I've been offered on trade-in for mine is $14,000 - a full $13k less than I had in it after only 8 months. But, if you can take that carmax offer and used it for a trade-in value somewhere else you will get the sales tax shelter advantage (if your tax laws are like Indiana). The trade-in value is tax free. Here in Indiana, at 6% sales tax, you $19,000 trade-in value just reduced your out of pocket money by another $1,140.

Now, I have seen them on E-bay. And, now that the supply has dried up, I've seen some good sales. I saw a 2005 silver sport CRD with only one option - cruise control. It sold for $18,600 (which is probably all they paid for it - it had 17k miles on it). I think you MIGHT get $22k on Ebay... Give it a try...

go to toyota.ca, select vehicles, select appraise trade in, follow menu, takes you to blackbook on line, most dealers in ontario canada use this! remember also that when traded in ontario you save the tax on the trade value = extra 14%.

I need more room too, but there's no way I'm giving up my KJ CRD. I'm getting one of these for more room...

There's one on Ebay for $2000. Cheaper than the hit I'd take by trading it in and buying something else.

SWEET!!! My wife, nor my parents, can understand why I want a cargo trailer. You know.... "it will just sit most of the time" or "it will make the yard/driveway look ugly" or the other bazillion ones I've forgotten.

I finally just said "IT'S A MAN THING HONEY, YOU DON'T HAVE TO UNDERSTAND, JUST ACCEPT!" :D

I want one of the Haulmark Low Haulers, or maybe a Cub model, or maybe a Wells Cargo trailer..... so many choices! 8)

Don't get me wrong, I want something bigger too! But I just can't substantiate getting rid of my 22-29MPG diesel for the next available diesel option (3/4 ton pickup). Besides, they killed the Excursion and the H1(those b@st@rds!). Where's that diesel Toureg? Don't know. Who cares, they're about to make the Grand Cherokee diesel (which I will be test driving...oh yes), but that's not for a little while.

Anyway, I couldn't get rid of my CRD KJ, but I hope it all turns out well for you modelaford. Personally, I like what Joe Romas suggested. Keep it until 7500, sell it in CA, then buy the Grand Cherokee diesel.

Unless you're moving away from diesel. In which case, you have no end of options!

On the trailer note; I also really like the Wells Cargo TC Trecker with a V-front and a roof rack (good place for my kayaks and canoe).

But I've found better prices on the Haulmarks locally. The drawback is I'd have to fabricate a roof-rack for it. Ho hum.

Oh, and I'm lucky in the fact that my wife WANTS a cargo trailer so we can keep the KJ CRD (she loves it) and also go on longer trips. 8) What a woman!

First off, let's get our terms correct. They are STEALERS and not DEALERS. They steal your money...period. Don't ever trade a car in, and if you are so upside down that you can't afford to pay the difference on a private sale to satisfy the loan, then start saving (this is not directed at the original poster...just a rant on my part).

In your case, wait a little longer as the following will help the value of your vehicle:

1) CARB States - must have at least 7,500 miles and have been registered for six or more months.

2) Supply of new CRDs - In your case with it fully loaded out, I think you could probably get what you want for it since the ones that are still available on stealer lots are either sports or basic limited models.

3) If you have a loan on it, pay on it every two weeks instead of once per month (if your loan company allows this). Interest accrues daily on auto loans so paying every two weeks allows you to pay the same payment with more of that money going toward the principle on the loan.

As someone else suggested, put it on eBay, and maybe cars.com or autotrader.com. The CARB states are where you can get the $$$ because they are restricted from buying these vehicles.

Anyway, if you are going to sell, good luck with the sale!

Yeah, I've thought about the CARB thing too... so I might just stick it out a bit longer. Yes, I'm defintely selling it, and am defintely sticking with Diesel. That new small v8 Cummins for the 1500 RAM would be an instant sale, but it's still 2 years away... we'll see what happens. It's listed, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that is sells soon.

Thanks again all,
Paul

I look at it this way, the financial damage was already done last September when I drove it off the lot. This is no different than any other new car, sell it in the first couple of years and take a beating. The best strategy is to use up most of the basic warranty, then get rid of it. I'm giving it until Spring '07. If the fuel price imbalance on diesel fuel continues, I will probably sell it and my older 2wd pick-up to get one new 4wd pick-up. Alone, the $500/yr savings for not insuring the extra vehicle will more than offset the fuel savings of the CRD.
