Post subject:  NC State Inspection - Thank God It's a Diesel!

Well, finally broke down this morning and went to get the state inspection done. I was dreading the possibility that, since it had been reflashed during EGR replacement, they wouldn't be able to check emissions via OBDII and I would have to make a trip to get the F31 recall done.

After I pulled up to the shop and got out, and told the gemt I was there to get the state inspection done, I started to give him a warning that he might have problems with his OBDII hookup due to the programming problems DC was having with these vehicles -

Me - "You might have some trouble hooking up your computer to check the emissions. On the '06 models and some of the '05's with diesels like this one, they've had trouble with the programming-"

Him (interrupting) - "Wait a second, this thing is a diesel?"

Me - "Sure is" (flipping back fuel flap to show him the green cap and "Diesel Fuel Only" label). "That's what the CRD badge on the back stands for, Common Rail Diesel".

Him (checking the Fuel Type on the registration and seeing the "D" printed there) - "Heck, if it's a diesel, I don't need to hook up the computer, all I need to do is the safety inspection for 9 bucks".

Me (doubtful) - "Are you sure? This IS an '05".

Him - "Yep, doesn't matter what year it is. NC state law, as long as it's a diesel, all I have to do is the safety inspection".

Hmmm, just might be worth keeping this beast after all.

How about something really goofy here in NH. WIth diesels, the techs are required to connect to the machine, prove that there are no check engine faults, then zero out the emissions boxes because its a diesel. However, the shops do charge you for an emissions test plus the vehicle inspt. I get free yearly insp from my dealer so the only problem is waiting around while they do the non-emissions emissions test

AZ also has the first 3 years inspection free. I'll find out what the deal is in 2009.[/list]

FL discontinued inspections several years ago when they realized it wasn't really accomplishing anything.

Interesting you should mention the 3 yr. wavier until '09, just after the warranty runs out. I have the same thing in Ohio, testing via computer link every other year (odd-even) depending on the model year. So my '05 won't get tested until I need to renew the tags in Feb. '09 (outside the basic warranty). I guess I'm one of the lucky ones with a 7/100 b2b warranty. I can easily see DC leaving some unsuspecting owner hanging out to dry with a failed data link and no warranty.
