32000 kilometersand the dealer still can't figure out why my engine ticks loudly, after running up to temperature the engine will start to tick very loud not a normal engine sound as the dealer seems to think my engine developed this sound at about 6000kilometers. sometimes it will not tick loudly till i shut it off then restart it when it is warm sounds like a sticking valve to me but the dealer seems to think this is normal. i think i need to find a better dealership that is qualified for the CRD engine |

They need to remove the head and check the valve springs...then the oil pan and check the main bearings and wrist pins... Did they even put a stethoscope on your engine to narrow down the location of the "ticking"? |

Thats funny mine does this too, not all the time but often enough for me to think "WTF " ? The engine feels strong as an OX & can easily drag off TJ's & XJ's ect so I dont think too much off it. When i've been driving for a while it stops, but sometimes it stays for ages. I've done 7000klm and am about to change the oil for the 2nd time. I did the first change at 1500klm as I do this regardless of what a dealer tells me (on every car i've owned since new). I spend alot of the time in dusty conditions so changing the oil is something I do regulary and the airfilter for that matter. I've just bought a new 15W40 turbo oil from PM Lubricants. They are famous in Australia for the trucking industry. They get much better (less) engine wear, better power & fuel economy, and bearings ect last alot longer. I've been told it will quieten the engine down a bit too, as the Mobil 1 that's in there is a 0W30 - too 'light' for such a tight new engine, and will shear quicker. OK for running it in for a few months, but time to change to the good stuff |

Some owners report a noise coming from the left rear of the engine before the torque converter goes out |

This discussion has been brought up before, because mine has ticked for a very long time. I thought the conclusion was it was the injectors? Its rythmic, although most internal failures would be rythmic too..... |

I've got a feeling its the injectors. I'm also running a 150mls of P800 treatments though a full tank of pump diesel at the moment. I dont thinks its been doing it since I put the treatment in, as its an upper cylinder & head lubricant. |

mine does this as well. It comes and goes. I think its a lifter not receiving enought oil from time to time. I have heard a similar noise on an old detroit diesel offshore- the engineer told me it was a burnt valve. They had to rebuild that engine. I'm sure its all that evil biodiesel I've been running. DarbyWalters mention of the stethoscope is definantly not something to overlook, that is one of the best diagnostic tools there is for locating problems. You can buy one fairly cheap, but you can use a lot of different things to transmit the sounds from the engine to your ears, a piece of wood will even work, something like a 1" dowel rod, have even used a piece of 2x4 I am used to old cars, like my 64 galaxy, you could change the oil in that thing without ever crawling underneath it. With the CRD you might have a hard time locating bottom end noises due to all the stuff in the way, but you should be able to get to the top end fairly easy. |

they're not smart enough to try a stethascope they tell me if no lights come on and no codes come up there is nothing wrong new mechanics today can't seem to multitask like old mechanics. old mechanics will look at what comes up for diagnostic on computer but also listen to an engine and they will also work on any part of a car. new mechanics don't know what to do if a computer doesn't tell them what to do.and they all seem to specialize in one area of mechanics instead of all areas |
