I know the CRD front springs are heavier than the aftermarket springs, I was just wondering if anyone knew by how much?

I'll take them to Fulcrum Suspension (where I used to work for years!) and use the machine to calculate it.

I'll post up the results when I have them.

I've always wanted to know as well, this just gives me the motivation to do it

Riteo, back again.

I took one of the stock 05 BUILT KJ CRD front springs to Fulcrum today.

We did it twice just to make sure the calibration & maths were correct.

Test 1 = 411 pounds

Test 2 = 409 pounds

So as for an outcome, I'm sure you could clearly say that these stock 05 CRD springs are 410pounds

I also spoke to an old mate of mine down at King Springs on the Gold Coast today. I got some valuable info regarding the OME & Kings coils.

The OME 927's are 430 pound & the Kings 27HD part no# are 440 pound.

I'm most likely going to try a set of these out, with an extra turn in them too. Should be a genuine 3 to 3.25" lift me thinks, including a front Steel Bar.

I'll let you know how we go.

Can someone in the know educate me on the ins and outs of springs? Specifically, and this was alluded to in another post, why does the HD OME springs have more poundage yet sag when weight is applied as compared to the CRD springs?

Thanks!

Dave

According to Seth, the HD OME are 400 lb springs. The CRD were measured out at 410 lb. I guess an extra 20 lbs makes quite a difference.

Hmmm. Dave there are numerous things that cause a vehicles' suspension to lose ride height, but just remember, the springs may not be 'sagging' because in 99.9% of all cases, if you remove the extra weight you put on, you'll find the vehicle will most likely go back to the original lifted ride height.

The KJ like all IFS 'coil over' type suspensions' are particularly suspeptable to ride height loss from adding weight as the suspension design works on an approx 2:1 ratio of load. The coil over itself sits inboard somewhat, and the physical size of the coil isnt that huge in comparison to say a Toyota 80 series Landcruiser, or Landrover for instance, therefore they make the coil with heavy gauge wire and put some 'rate' into it.

Take this example:
The stock KJ CRD coil is around 400Lb.

If the KJ had a front suspension that was exactly the same as say an XJ or TJ, the spring rate would probably be closer to 220-250Lb as the design doesnt concentrate the load as hard on the springs as the IFS design does. Basic mechanics / physics applies to additional weight too. If you put a 50Kg Bull Bar on the front of your KJ, the weight imposed on the coils/suspension would be around 100kgs extra, therefore causing the car to lose ride height.

That is a generalisation that the 'book' has had published.

Like I said in another post, I am in direct contact with the manufacturer of all ARB springs and believe me, they are 430Lb in the 927's.

One note to add. Spring rates are in lbs/in so the 420 lbs springs will sag 1" for every 420 lbs. It's good to now how long the unloaded length is as well as the rate. For example a 10 " 420lb with a 1260 lb load will settle in at 7" while a 8" spring will settle in at 5". The rate may be the same but one will look like it sagged.

That's true, the factory CRD coil could be longer and preloaded more at rest to change the height but not the spring rate over distance. The HD spring rates were published rates from OME. The specs were posted last week for all the springs, if they are in error, so be it. Still All J says the HD springs don't work well on the Frankenlift.
