Post subject:  First concern - Oil Leak ? Black stain on the floor

This morning I started the CRD up and backed out of the garage. My wife was also leaving and waved for me to come and see something. It looks about where the turbo would be. It was 2 black spots about the size of a silver dollar and one twice the size. It was very black. I don't know what it was. I couldn't tell if it was just super black oil, or some kind of wet soot that leaked out of an exhaust leak. Anybody have any tips on what to check or what it could be? I've got about 16,000 miles on it and I changed the oil about 1500 miles ago. I haven't had a leak before this and I'm going to check where I parked at work today. Any and all help is welcome. Would any of this be covered by the factory warranty and if not - I do have the extended one.

It'll be covered by the standard warranty for another 20K.

Could it be black crap dripping off the AC condenser? I was in a hurry so I didn't even really look at it. It wasnt oil though I dont think. It seemed too runny.

You would know if it was CRD motor oil.

I've had a similair thing since May, finally yesterday the dealer diagnosed it as the rear engine seal. bummer because the tranny, transfer and shafts have to come off as well,
hope it all goes back together as well since it really drives like a top now!.

Looks like this is starting to be a common problem.

I get mine at the dealer, the last time he wanted to sell me a generic one, I said no I want the OEM since leaking $8/qt. oil on the ground doesn't fly with me. I pay $2.61 ea. here at the dealer, sure they can be had somewhere else cheaper, but it's worth the security knowing I won't roast the engine on a long haul somewhere if it starts leaking. Good Luck. :)

My level is still good. I don't think I'm gonna fix it now because I'm not about to waste the expensive booty oil which is only about 1,500 miles old. So I guess I'm gonna tough it out.

My '93 Volvo (owned since new-now has 150k miles) has a crush washer for the oil bung as well. I re-use the washers until they need replacing which can easily be seen as they tend to become "oval" instead of round, or show thinning in one area. Volvo gets $ 1.25 each, which I know is cheap, but just seems to me not worth the money when a crush washer will go 8 or so changes without problem. The volvo washers were originally copper, but they changed to aluminum a few years ago.

I dont think I have ever replaced one of those crush washers because of a leak. Only when they get lost in the drain pan  I guess I lose one often enough to avoid leaks?

My CRD is leaking oil once again and the dealer has no clue. It looks like its coming from that oil galley plug on the block, but the tech also suspects the valve cover now. Seems like its just working its way down the block onto the bellhousing. They put a flouresent dye in the oil so they can better track it down. Ill let you know what they find.
