I'm not sure if this thread needs to be sticky (probably not) but i'd like to start some discussion on this. I'd like to know more about the origins of this engine, what other vehicles is it in, what are the 'other' performance specs, what have people done to them so far for gains ect...... I dont want to turn my KJ into a drag car as that's not what its intended to be, but i'd like to give it a proper power boost up later on. Has anyone put on a larger Turbo and got rid of the VGT setup ? |

Seems like the best venue would be the INMOTION Tuning chip...they can set many parameters giving power, torque and better mpg. They can even minimize the EGR. The snorkel from GibsonRM will probably be hear by the end of this year at DirksOffRoad.com That will get us lots of clean air. A 3" exhaust from the turbo back should also help with a hi-Flow cat in place. |

Well, I know poeple are probably tired of hearing this, but Im still impressed with the SP module. I had it rermoved for about 4 weeks and just recently put it back on and I think I forgot how much it really improves power and driveability. Definitely the best bang for the money! I know the KJ is not made for drag racing, but it surely performs well on a drag strip |

I dont believe the snorkle will give noticable gains, but yes clean air. The power chips' now available are good, but i'd really like to find out how far someone has gone ? 160Kw + ?? 550Nm ?? |

the SP module is supposed to add 150ft-lb, which I think is not true, and that would bring the total torque up to 450ft-lb which I believe equals 600NM |

That is more than a 50% gain. Sounds a little too good to be true. The reason why I probably won't add a chip is because a lot of them only change injected quantity and timing of fuel. I would want something that adds boost and reduces EGR as well. |

For $1,100 they DOUBLED the rear wheel h.p. and torque. Never underestimate the ability to get huge power from a turbo diesel. Is a 50% increase in torque possible, i'd say it's easily done. Would I want to do it and risk warranty problems or everyday driveability,,,,probably not. |

The problem with increasing hp/torque too much with the CRD is it will go into limp mode once a certain hp/torque number is reached. It is caused by the "piggyback" computer system in the Jeep CRD. Some of the "Diesel Modules" out there have different "levels" of power adjustments and they tell you that at a certain "level" of power you may/will experience limp mode. The potential might be there but DC has put thier foot in the door to keep us resonable and the CRD together, including the tranny. Now, with the INMOTION Tuning chip it probably could be programmed not to go into limp mode...maybe. Diesel Power also tested two modules on the CRD...Diesel Performance and SP or Predator I think...the rear wheel torque numbers were around 308-318 or so...that would put it at around 380-390 at the flywheel. *Don't quote me on the exact figures, but it was close to the advertised numbers I think* |

Hmmmm, there are cirtainly some reasonable gains to be had with these Power Chips. My fundamental reason for doing this is simple. When I go to 265/75/16's, i'm going to experience a definate drop with the acceleration and 'push in the back' feel, so i'm either going to power up the torque of the engine to compensate, or regear to 4.10's. The only thing with 4.10's is that it takes more money and more time to do than an engine powerup. I've got a sneaking suspision that a decent powerup will give much more of a satisfactory feeling on road than regearing. Crawling i'm not too worried about - with the 245/75/16's i've got on now, I sometimes feel myself wanting to get out and push when in 4Lo if you know what I mean......265's wont change that feeling too much in 4Lo, for me, it would be a little bit of a positive I guess. |

1/4 mile: Stock 18.8 @ 73.1mph w/Dynomax cat back 18.5 @ 74.1mph Diesel Power CR-S 16.9 @ 81.6mph Predator Module 17.1 @ 82.3 HP and Torque: Stock w/ Dynomax 159rwh / 268ft#s ( torque curve fell way off after 2000 rpm ) Diesel Power CR-S 183.3rwh / 306.6ft#s ( flattened out torque curve and came on faster and longer-also have the CR-B which a favorite in Europe and is a little stronger but can cause "limp" mode with a heavy foot ) Predator 183.9rwh / 310.1ft#s Knocked almost 3 seconds off the 0-60 and almost 2 seconds off the 50-70 Basically they both gained about 24rwp and 42ft#s all measured at the rear wheels on a 454Dyno [/i] |

I would be really interested in the 0-60 numbers as well. Stock predator and so on.... |

The powerstroke has more than double the displacement of our motors. I don't subscribe to Diesel power, but $1,100 sounds like they did a little more than chip it. What I was talking about was a chip that claimed to give you a more than 50% increase in torque....that doesn't sound possible to me without comprimising the reliability and longevity of the CRD engine or various other componenets. Secondly, some engines are more "friendly" to mods...again not overly familiar with the PS 6.0, but since there are lots lots more of those in existance than the CRD I would imaging it is cheaper to gain HP/Torque than with our CRD. Everyone knows the CRD is a limited production, so just as a matter of supply and demand I would think mods for our rigs would run slightly higher because there isn't as much money to be made off us as there is for the PS crowd. We need more info....what did the article say they did for $1,100? |

On the 0-60 and 50-70 they were almost 3 and 2 seconds. Stock times for 0-60 are supposed to be ~10.2 seconds so you can figure the ~7.5 seconds. It seems like the big improvement comes from the better shape fo the torque curve after the 2000 rpm range where the stock CRD drops off...and of course the added power numbers. |

10.2s for stock? Isnt that a little low? The best I could do was a little less than 10s with my programmer cranked up all the way, OD off and brake stand. |

I saw confliting numbers but most did show that the CRD was the same as the 3.7L from 0-60. Most numbers I have seen in the past have been 10-10.9 seconds on the gasser. It of course depends on options and accessories. Whatever the "true" numbers are...anywhere near 2 seconds improvement will be noticeable. I know that "almost 3 seconds" seems a bit suspect. Not because it is a big improvement, but because it is vague. Anytime I read "vague" numbers it makes me think that they really didn't test or measure correctly. The Dyno numbers I trust! |

2 to 3 seconds off any vehicles' 0-60 time is a huge jump in performance, but it is much easier to gain performance & accelleration from Turbo Charged Diesels......god luv em ......... |

Without going into the motor there is a limit what can be done. Power chip or reflash tune on the motor, larger turbo, larger injectors, open exhaust, and Larger intake including a better flowing CAC. I am having problems finding the next larger injectors in our series. I am sure Garrett makes a larger turbo if needed. OldNavy has a computer tuner/hacker working on a custom tune for the CRD and this guy is big into the TDI diesels so he already knows what needs to be done. I have the 3" exh., MP-8 performance module from TS Performance and am working on some of the other items. I know that TSP's test CRD is stock and the only thing the changed was uping the boost and also the rail pressure but keeping within the rated limits. They don't do anything with the EGR which really should be addressed to get improved performance. When the EGR dies on my CRD if it is in the off/closed position I will run it that way and cover the engine light or figure something out. For the EGR to be off/closed is important for increasing the performance. Why haven't I dynoed it yet. Dynos are not cheap and I don't have the curiosity to find each little increase. When I have gotten it far enough into what I want out of it I will get some numbers then. I would rather use the money that I would be spending on dynos on performance upgrades. JMNSHO! |

The 0-6- and 50-7- numbers must be off. The total gain in the 1/4 mile is 1.90 seconds. If you gained 2.5 0-60 and 1.5 50-70, the gain would have to be at least 4 seconds minimum. |
