Post subject:  Performance Exhaust for the CRD?

Does anyone know of any CRD specific preformance exhaust systems? Looking to replace everyting from the turbo back if possible. Would like a high flow cat, and muffler if one exists.

Look a little further down the page at the 3" stainless exhaust post. Not sure you'll improve your performance any.

May want to read this for an alternative choice.

I've read both those posts previous to my posting, and really would like to replace the catalytic converter as well to better improve flow. The Magnaflow is my top choice as of now but wanted to know if anyone knew of a "bolt-on" kit from the turbo back.

You are not going to find a bolt on that replaces the stock cat...rules govern the length a stock cat HAS to be on a vehicle...80,000 miles or something like that.

In PA diesels are exempt from emissions, so correct me if I am wrong but I do not even think they check the cat, or are required to have one on the vehicle. However I would like to keep a cat since they do reduce exhaust noise.

This was the thread I started about my 3" SS exhaust. What you want is only provided by a high performance muffler shop. I have one last part to my exhaust and that is to remove the flanged down pipe and build a new flage that is 3" from the get go and that will remove the last restriction. If you read my thread you will find I replaced the CAT with a 3" high flow Diesel CAT, 3" flex pipe, 24" 3" in and 3" out straight thru Magnaflow muffler. All tubing bends are mandrel bent and the only joint that wasn't welded uses a band clamp to Maximize Exhaust Flow

Post subject:  Remove muffler

On my TDI i just removed the muffler and ran a strait pipe out the back. Turbo reduces all the engine sound so its about same sound as stock. Turbo winds up allot faster.
Think this would work on the CRD, has any one tried?

Post subject:  Chop that pipe

Chop that pipe just after the cat to eliminate the contriction of the stock exaust flange. Weld in a new 2.5 inch flange and a dynomax muffler. Good to go.

Of course, straight pipe is about as least restrictive as it gets. :D

PA may be exempt from emissions testing but you can be assured if it came with a convertor on it from the factory it should be intact.

I believe the EPA has a little more jurisdiction over clean air than any individual state has.

The EPA may have more jurisdiction over what parts are "supposed" to be on a vehicle but they do not inspect the vehicle. I will have to look into this but I do not think the exhaust is even looked at during inspection as far as what parts it has, just to see if there are any leaks. Also keep in mind diesels up until and including the '06 model year meet EPA standards, I just think CA and various other states choose to adopt stricter diesel emission laws and with the '07 model year the EPA is now adopting stricter diesel emission laws country wide.

That is why looking at my system it fills all the requirements of a stock system. The inspector would really have to be a super person to figure out the mine wasn't stock. Oh yea, they don't pay them enough to get someone who will find it. The EPA has mandates and no one hardley to enforce them. It come mostly from someone ratting you out. I can make a strong case of wanting to comply I just wanted to have a better flowing system. I wonder how it would due in Cafalornia? :P

I think the biggest exhaust benefits are to be had by replacing not only the muffler and tailpipe, but the whole enchilada. The one restriction seems to be the outlet of the turbocharger and the flange that mates with it: not much of a way to open that up. Still, opening things up after that point should be a real benefit.

John Bendit at Upscale Automotive (http://www.upscaleauto.com/) is working on a 3" solution that replaces everything from the downpipe on. He has been concerned about the demand for the system though. If you're actually considering such a system, I'd recommend you get in touch with him and let him know.

I'm defintly going to be contacting him about the exhaust. I want one before I even think about adding a power programmer to the libby.

See I am interested in a complete system as well. Here a custom job like that would run me about $3000-5000 and I don't like it that much.

$1300.00 is a good price for a custom Stainless system

Look at were you are and look at were I am. I filled up the CRD KJ yesterday with 1/8 tank showing and it cost me $96.25, what did it cost you?

Oops, I didn't see you were in Germany. I have no idea what a system would cost over there. My Bad.
