It's almost time for the next oil change on the CRD, and I've been thinking (yeah, I know)

I'm not terribly happy with the factory oil filter on the CRD. First of all, I can't stand the fact that you can't put more that a capful of oil in it before putting it on, so it takes several seconds for the oil pressure to come up after an oil change. Second, the filter is kinda small.

The Wix replacement is a 51516, which is pretty much identical in size - has anyone tried a Wix 51515? The thread size is the same, the sealing gasket is the same, but the length is a little longer, the diameter is about 1/2 bigger (which looks to make for a tight fit, but by my measurements should still fit) and it can be easily primed, not to mention the fact that it holds quite a bit more oil. I'm changing the oil in mine this weekend, and am going to try it. Will post results back (as far as fit & whatnot) but I would love to hear some input/discussion/flames/ et cetera.

I suppose it is worth a try, definantly let us know how/if it works out. Plus how much more oil it holds, clearances etc.

I hope it don't hang down too far. You could set up a bypass filter system if your concern about having more filtration.

You need to pay attention not only to the size but the pressure setting of the bypass valve and check valve. You wouldn't want to give DC a "get out of warranty free" card. I've changed mine twice and didn't pre-fill (obviously/impossible) without any problems, built pressure quickly. Wouldn't worry about it.

I've been doing some research into the % filtering efficiency
of various oil filters (different manufacturers) that I would
consider using. Coincidentally, I just received an email today
from VM Motori in Italy regarding the Mopar filter made in Italy.
This is the last of the 3 filters I have researched.
I had to contact VM directly because neither the dealers that I
contacted nor DC direct had the faintest clue to these particulars.
Perhaps some of you could help me decifer VM's response.
Here it is:

MATERIAL SPECIFICATION
FILTER PAPER
PF 21
?[TAB]FILTERING EFFICIENCY AC FINE 27 BOSSO TM-BF25 [PARA]0014 %

If anyone is interested in my other findings, LMK and I will post them.

AC Fine is a test contaminant used to assess both filters and the contaminant sensitivity of all types of tribological mechanisms. So I guess .0014 would be pretty good?

I'm not sure how fine the test contaminant is (27?) or the test procedure (?) of Bosso TM-BF25 is for that matter. Seems like to me some important info has been left out. Hey what do I know, I don't have the correct degree.

I don't have a clue what those numbers mean!!!

However, I'll bet if you check this forum, they might know -

http://theoildrop.server101.com/forums/ubbthreads.php

As far as the bypass settings - here are the specs for the WIX filter:

Style: Spin-On Lube Filter
Service: Lube
Type: Full Flow
Media: Paper
Height: 5.178
Outer Diameter: 3.660
Thread Size: 3/4-16
By-Pass Valve Setting-PSI: 8-11
Anti-Drain Back Valve: Yes
Beta Ratio: 2/20=13/23
Burst Pressure-PSI: 270
Max Flow Rate: 7-9 GPM
Nominal Micro Rating: 19

Now just to find the figures on the Mopar Italian made on these ....

I recently bought a napa gold filter and it seemed like the finest built filter i'd ever seen, however, I know looks don't mean chit about filtering.

If someone could please post the above posted info I got
from VM Motori on the "oildrop" forum and let me know we
would appreciate it. They are not taking new registrations
so I can't get on and post. I would really like to know so
that I could finish my research on the 3 best oil filters for
our CRDs and post the results.
Come on, help me out here please!
Thanks.

Made by Wix which makes pretty good filters.

Doc B, Did you happen to look at the Amsoil Ea filter lines specs?

JJ,
Yes I did. It is one of the 3.
(Mopar, Amsoil, NapaGold).
I called the Amsoil company directly to get it
straight from the horses as mouth. (just kidding).
Very impressive:
98.7 % @ 15 microns
50.0 % @ 7 microns
9-11 gal/min Flow thru.
and ? higher ? contaminant capacity.

Please check, do I have my numbers correct?
This is a post, and someone may actually read this.

I am still waiting for someone who knows a bit more
about motor oil and filters to decifer the paragraph above
from VM Motori. I was planning to post the results of all
3 filters at the same time for general knowledge, and as a
help for some of us to make up our minds as to which filter
to use. I have learned quite alot from this forum and just
wanted to give something back.

JJ, since Mopar filters are kind of your compition, maybe you
would have some avenues to find out?
Thanks.

I think the bigger problem with these vechicles is the filter location. For a "Trail Rated" vechicle I was very surpried to see the darn filter so low and vunerable!!! My sport didn't come with factory skid plates which is a travisty waiting to happen as far as I'm concerned. If DC decided to place the filter so low to the ground, they should have thrown a skid plate under it to protect it...I mean who the heck is going to notice an extra $100 in the purchase price of a new vechicle?

Hey the tanny and transfer case skids are only about $35 each and they only take about 10 to 15 minutes each to install. This tells us what bean counters are good for these days. The fuel tank is about $100 and is the only "expensive" OEM skid.

Awesome, my pricing was based in CDN $$$ and based that my dealership prices seem expensive (tow hook kit $175 CDN !!! lol). Like I said I'm buying or fabricating one soon before I hit the trails again....too bad DC made this oversite and chose to save $35 instead of protecting a very expensive engine!!!

As for filters, I get all my service done at a local diesel engine specialist shop, they have a copy of my reccomended service chart from my owners manual (we use schedule B here) as well as a listing of the specs for all fluids/materials used for maintenance.
