Post subject:  Strange sound in my CRD

I have newly bought a 2003 CRD and have a strange sound coming from it. I have searched this forum but didn´t find anything that seems to be the same... Here it goes:

It is a scratching / rubbing noice coming from standing still at idle up to about 35mph. Doesnt seems to matter if its in neutral or in drive (automatic). I think its still there over 35 but the wind and road noise are overvoicing it.

It can come and go at idle, usually comes when standing still and shifting to drive from neutral. If I hold the brake standing still in drive and give it just the slightest throttle to about 1000rpms it increases.

If I drive it at lo speeds below 35 and let go of the trottle, still moving, it encreases when turning right.

I have never had a Jeep before and just want some advice about what to check.

03 CRD? You must not be in North America.

When you say it "increases," do you mean it increases in volume (like it gets louder)? Or is it an increasing rhythm (like scratch..........scratch..........scratch..........scratch.....scratch.....scratch.....scratch..scratch..scratch..scratchscratchscratchscratchscratch) as you increase engine speed?

I had a scratching noise like that once and it ended up being part of the forest hung on my drive-shaft, so every time it turned it scratched the underbelly of my truck. I also had a bit of jungle trapped in my wheel before that scratched as it went 'round and 'roung. But I don't think that's your issue since is occurs while your sitting still.

Where did you buy it from?

If the sound is coming from center of vehicle you may have something loose in tranny or flywheel or bell housing I would guess. Hard to say without being able to hear it and locate where the noise is coming from. I sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Firts of all i´m from Sweden.. Everyone here is driving disels...

Yes, it is so hard to descripe a sound.. It increases in volume not in repetitions, it comes from the front on passenger side...

Welcome to the forum hedgehog (sorry I didn't say that in the first post).

I believe you drive on the left side of the vehicle, like we do in America. Yes?

Well, there's nothing moving in the wheel assembly when you're sitting still, so it's not there. I don't know what in the drivetrain would cause a scratching noise that would increase in volume when you turned right. That part has me a bit stumped.

Do you hear the noise in 2WD and 4WD?

Author:  hedghog [ Fri Nov 10, 2006 4:01 pm ]
Post subject:

Yes, wheel is on the left side.. :-)

I hear it in both 2wd & 4wd... Going to the lift tomorrow looking under it.. maybe I´ll find something..
I will try record a video with sound on it but I doubt that the sound will be heard..

Is yours the 2.5 liter CRD?

I'm very interested to hear what you find when it's up in the air. Keep us posted.

Finally I solved it!! (Or to be correct, my local Jeep service-point solved it).

Turned out to be the bearing on the alternator, (think it is called alternator, generator in swede). It made a strande noice on idle then when I turned the wheel and the power steering "kicked in" the actual sound I was worrying about started...

By the way, yes all crds from 2003 are 2,8 here in Sweden.

Thanx for all the advices.

Thanks for the heads-up. That's good information to have. How costly was the repair?

Do you have an EGR flow control valve?

Post subject:

The "EGR Flow Control Valve" is actually referred to by people at VM as the TVA - Throttle Valve Assembly/Actuator.

The 2003 CRD engines did not have the TVA - just the EGR valve. It was a different set-up from those years in which the EGR valve was a pneumatic unit mounted on the exhaust manifold with the cooler attached directly to it.

The problem with using the VM terminology is that you are probably the only person here who deals with VM directly. The rest of us are stuck with DC/Jeep terminology.

From the service manual

I still like to know other names for the parts though, it might be more likely that a fix/upgraded part will come through VM, NOT DC. So if you want to throw a new name out there for us every now and then feel free.

I have renamed them my self:

Throw out all the VM terms you can MrMopar64! As a matter of fact, let's make a sticky that lists all the DC/Mopar terms and their VM counterparts. I'd like a manual for this motor straight from VM.

I don't have a problem with alternate terminology either. But... after reading several posts with comments about what things are "actually" called, it started to seem a little condescending and I wanted to make the point that we hadn't simply pulled these terms out of our arses.

Oh no, I didn't mean to offend anyone! The DCX language is hardly ever used at all - even by DCX people at the tech center! The only time I ever see it mentioned is in the DCX service manuals, which may or may not be useful sometimes.

I'll see if I can get a manual or something that can be put up...

Not a big deal, the written word often fails to communicate intent.

If you go back a few months on the board, most failures of the EGR or Flow Control were lumped together. We started tracking part numbers and discussing the situation and discovered we had two different parts failing. Having terminology to differentiate them seemed helpful, and the service manual seemed a logical place to start.

Keep the inside information coming, we've needed and craved it for a while. :D
