Quite a few here have mentioned this as well. A mod that some (including myself) are doing is get one of the lower filter housings from an older model and replacing the current one. Since the new model intakes right behind the headlight, more crap seems to be getting in. The older model had a "snorkel" type of intake where air entered just above the rail above the headlight. The lower box will fit with your upper and some claim that there is less restriction with this mod. Search thru the subject posts and you should find the mod mentioned. You can usually get a lower box from a used parts locator online or if you can find a wrecked KJ in a local yard.

Hope that helps.

We have had a lot of rain the last couple of weeks and I have had no problem with wet filter. However that may because I have the home made bug screen behind the grill.

I have been meaning to post this for awhile, but one time I took the KJ through one of those automatic touch free car washes. Afterwards I noticed it didnt seem to be running quite right, pick up was a little slow, didnt seem to want to hold 70 MPH as silky smooth as before. Pulled off the highway and went straight to the airbox, SOAKING WET in there filter wasnt dripping but there was water in the box and filter was wet. I let it idle with the airbox cracked open and it dried up pretty quick. Now I have a gasser intake snorkel, but havnt tried the carwash test yet.

Well this week the wife was on the highway for some really heavy rain and the ilter is damp, not soaked or damaged in any way. That said I guess it is time to do that mod before it gets hydro-locked and leaves her stranded somewhere.

I've got this mod on mine. You need the bottom half of the air filter housing for a 2002 3.7 L V6 Liberty, direct fit as far as mounting and mating up to the top half of the CRD housing. Air inlet snorkel, and plastic water dam that snaps onto the crossbrace, you can order new from the dealer for $25 total.

You could also use the bottom half from a 2003 and up V6 Liberty, but there's an extra hose connection for the PCV system that you'd need to cap/plug off.

Just checked mine after 3000 miles , and driving thru a line of storms the other night that generated tornados locally, very heavy rain and high wind. No evidence of water, no accumulated dust dirt or bugs, air filter still looked as if it had just came out of the box.

Original thread for this mod was titled "Wet Air Filter".
