| Post subject: | CEL comes on then goes off after a short time |
Well, I got my first Check Engine Light (CEL) now at about 6600 miles The next day, I headed home and after filling up with fuel, the CEL light went out. This led me to send this message to the LOST KJ form to ask a few questions. 1. What conditions reset the CEL? 2. If I go to the dealer now after the CEL has gone off, will the code still be present for them to know what caused the CEL? 3. Given some of the stories on forum, what is the probability that if the code is present the dealer will be straight with me and get the problem resolved? Anyway, thank you for any help you can offer. I hope to have it in tomorrow to get checked out. |

Maybe the FUEL cap. if it was not on properly it will get you the CEL (Fuel system leak). once back on properly it will go out after a while. -Gab |

Quote: Maybe the FUEL cap. if it was not on properly it will get you the CEL (Fuel system leak). once back on properly it will go out after a while. This isn't applicable to CRD's as it is a vented fuel system. Quote: 1. What conditions reset the CEL? Somebody else will have to fill in the details but it depends on the CEL. Some must be manually reset; some are reset following a set number of warm-up/cool-down sequences w/o the triggering condition detected; some are reset as soon as the triggering condition is gone. Quote: 2. If I go to the dealer now after the CEL has gone off, will the code still be present for them to know what caused the CEL? Again, I think it depends upon the CEL, but someone else should confirm this. There are codes that can be available to the dealer regardless of the presence of a CEL. Quote: 3. It probably greatly improves your chances of success but I doubt it guarantees much of anything, especially insofar as honesty & dedication goes. The nature of the particular dealer seems to be the critical variable. |

Thanks! ...these are helpful. I was told that if I go to Auto Zone, they have a CEL code reader that they will let people use. I might run it by there to see if I can read a code if it is still visible. BioJeep, it looks like you have done the provent -- do you recommend it? |

BioJeep, it looks like you have done the provent -- do you recommend it? Provent? Do it, worth every penny. |

Thanks RFCRD! I have looked around at the different sites about the ProVent and the Racor? They appear to be the right answer. Is there any news coming about Old Navy's solution? Thanks again! |

I think what has been presented here over the months makes a good case for the Provent. I had my Provent before I got my Jeep. Drove it straight home w/16 miles on the clock & did the install before starting it up again. I collect 1-2 ounces of mucky oil per 1000 miles of driving, and it's hard to imagine letting that go into the intake given the EGR could be anything other than damaging, at least in the long-term. Cheap mod, easy install, little risk---makes good sense, the more so the longer you intend to keep the vehicle. I originally wanted the Racor but there's apparently no easy way to fit it underhood & is quite a bit more expensive (it was experimented with in a thread a few months ago). |

Extra filter element which is a good idea to have one on hand just in case. 2. Check valve which is not needed in this application unless you come up with a way to plumb the discharge back into the pan. Just make sure the discharge line/recepticle is completely air tight. Links to install photos are several places on this forum but if you need any install ideas, PM with a private e-mail address and can send you photos. |

| Post subject: | CEL code was for EGR flow... Not good |
Took our CRD into Jeep service for the Check Engine Light (CEL) we had last weekend. It turned out to be a code for flow on the EGR. Suffice it to say, that I am unhappy with this given what I've been reading on the forum for the past 6 months. The service folks are ordering the new EGR and will be replacing it next week. However, I'm convinced that the problem is caused largely by the blow-by oil accumulation. I have been researching the ProVent 2000 and Racor 4500 to help this. This is going to happen very soon -- Wish that OldNavy was done with his The question now is, how do I get the service people to clean out the accumulated oil so that I'm not coming back in a few months to replace the next EGR? What would this entail? I'm sure that the service folks would not be excited about doing this -- what are some good motivators that others have used to get resolution in this? Again, thanks everyone for help in the past and for any help you can offer at this point. |

I don't know what the percentage of re-fix on the EGR is, but I suspect it is pretty low. In my case, I had a EGR fix at about 10k and now have 36k without further problems. In addition, I do not use a provent and do use the "evil" OEM oil put in by the dealer. I pulled my hoses within the last thousand of miles, or so and saw very little oil inside. I was expecting lots of oil based on what is said here. So, the new EGR may just be a one time fix for you as well. Only time will tell if the EGR will go to 100k |

Thanks vtdog! I'm not convinced that I will be one of the lucky ones here. I took a look at the output from the tube going in to the EGR -- it is dripping with oil. That can't be good for the EGR and is likely to have an impact on the next EGR. I'm going to see what a ProVent or Racor can do. I'm still trying to figure out how to get the service folks to clean out the accumulated oil. What are some good motivators that others have used to get resolution in this? Has anyone heard an estimated availability date for OldNavy's CCV product? I still think that it is unconscionable that DCX would put a product with this type of design flaw given that they have been producing strong Mercedes diesel products for some time and include a ProVent type of facility. If will need to replace the EGR every 10K miles or so, this will be an expensive product to own – a well-oiled EGR becomes full employment act for Jeep service departments. |
