Post subject:  Opinions on Tire Monitor

I'm thinking about having the tire monitor installed on my 06 when I replace the tires. Is it worth having?

how much does that cost?

I have the Tire Monitor on mine and it's a cool feature but I'm not sure if it's worth hundreads of dollars. I see it as somthing to break 3-5 years or more down the road. But the cool and wow and safety factor makes it worth somthing.

I believe the sensors for the tires are $70 total and the computer is already programmed for them. So it should be around $70 bucks plus installation. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

I think there is a relationship between keyless entry and the tire monitors. In other words, if you have one, it is easier to add the other. Maybe they communicate over the same antenna?

I have it and like it. The tire pressure readings are accurate -- at least on mine.

One of the tire sensors appeared to stop working temporarily after driving for an hour in the rain. (Though, nothing happened after 30 other Florida rainstorms, so I can't say if it was really related.) A day later it came back on line.

That reminds me. With the relatively cooler weather we've been having here the thing complains occasionally about the pressure in the spare tire being low.

I believe that all 05 and 06's have the monitors in the valve stem, I know I do. If you have metal valve stems and not rubber you probably already have the sensor. The problem is you don't have the EVIC, also known as overhead display. I have the EVIC, but still don't get my tire pressure displayed. I do get a warning light if they are low. I asked the dealer about getting the EVIC to display pressure, they said it takes a different EVIC for around $500. My service guy, who I trust, said it is not worth it as DCX has always had problems with the tire pressure monitors. So I have a pressure gauge in the glove box.

Hope that helps.

About 3 weeks after I bought the Jeep doing about 70MPH on highway, loud bang under the car, but noticed nothing weird about the driving.
Few seconds later tire pressure warning comes on RH REAR, showing 90.....80....70 gowing down fast, still car drives normal doing 70MPH.
No noise , no pulling, but just be sure. I pulled over to check..., big chunk o rear fender missing, hole in the inside liner and some good inner wheel well steel damage
plus a ripped tire.
I figured with a flat I would have noticed something right away at those speeds, not so, the tire warning worked, and save me from further damage.
Problably chunk of steel of something that did some housekeeping.

Worked for me!.

It's a nice convenience well worth $70 to me, but not worth the cost of a new EVIC.

This is the first I've heard of two different EVICs. Next time I bring in the CRD for service I'll ask about it and see what they have to say.

There are also wireless receivers in the body to pick up the transmissions from the wireless transmitter units on the bottom side of the valve stem. Iirc, they run around 320 kilohertz. Not sure if those receivers come on all CRD's if not ordered with the TPM system. I know it was only about $75 to order the TPM on mine (Limited with EVIC) from the factory, so I did.

The only down side to them is you have to have someone with a doughnut core shaped tool when you change tires to train the correct transmitter to the right wireless pickup unit. In addition, the FSM is full of warnings about not having the tire machine going all the way around the rim when removing or installing tires, so that the wireless unit on the bottom of the tire stem isn't damaged. I called one major tire chain about putting on new tires and they said they would "figure it out" when I told them about the TPM system - I ended up taking it to the dealer - they did it correctly.

I was thinking about rotating the tires this weekend when I remembered that relationship problem. Seems they could come up with a unique code on each wireless receiver to tell the EVIC which tire is which.

KenJennings,
Thanks for your above post.
Also have an 06 Limited CRD, with package G.
I have been kind of wondering about the monitoring
system since I already blew 2 of the STs.
Would like to know my tire pressures(in this modern age,
why not just look? at EVIC) I'm not lazy to get out the tire gauge,
But what the hay? Since its supposed to be on the vehicle, ?
Stopped by stealership today, and the told me it only comes on the
Grand Cherokee and not the Liberty. Now I'm very confused.
I ask him to pull out an 06 Jeep Liberty sales book (you know the one
you get at dealer with all the model options and specs) and show him
where on the next to last page under G package the "Tire Pressure
Monitoring Display System" is "Included!". He still says no, it only comes
on the GC. I take a deep breath, walk out, look back, and decide to leave the large
showroom window in one piece (today). The tranny felt a little funny when I was
backing up towards the showroom, but I figured I'd better not. Didn't want to ruin
my tire cover.
Could you please tell me (us) if you special ordered the TPMDS, or EVIC and what package
do you have?
Thanks

I've got a 06 low end Liberty CRD and it has the tire monitors but no EVIC. I get messages on the odometer but so far I've not had tire problems at 3800 miles. Looking at the window sticker "tire pressure monitor and warning system" is listed under standard equiptment on a Limited CRD. Looking on the sales brocure it listes it as optional when not talking about limiteds. You can tell if you have it by looking at the valve stems. Rubber=no. Bolt like thing =yes.

I remember the TPM being a $68 option not included in any package and separate of but requiring the EVIC. I could be wrong tho. It at least wasn't included in a 2006 Limited w/Package F.

The 06 Liberty Ltd with package G comes with the "simple" tire monitor. In this version the computer monitors the tire pressure and if there are issues it displays general "low tire pressure warning" messages on the EVIC.

I ordered my CRD with the $75 option for the factory to add the tire pressure display to the EVIC. (And so, yes, it requires the EVIC be installed.) Pressing the STEP button on the EVIC will eventually reach a display of a small, overhead outline of the vehicle with psi numbers next to each tire. The manual warns not to consider it authoritative. I've found it has always been very close to my tire gague. (I originally posted it displayed in 1/2 psi increments. Don't know what I was smoking. Probably thinking of my digital tire gauge. )

The spare tire is not on the display -- it is still handled by the simple monitoring.

As far as I know, the monitoring hardware in the tires is the same for the simple monitoring or the individual tire display. The difference is just a change to the EVIC to add the extra display. So, I suspect if you already have an EVIC it should be trivial for the dealer to add the tire pressure display.

This is what the $75 EVIC option looks like:

It was a tad chilly that morning and the pressure had dropped in all tires.

"Tire Pressure Monitoring" is "included" with certain option packages on the CRD. However, this is only the equipment to monitor tire pressure. The actual display of tire pressure psi on the EVIC does not come with any package. For 2006 the tire pressure display on the EVIC is an optional extra.

I don't know why DC did this other than to squeeze more money out of the customer. The tire pressure monitoring hardware is already in the vehicle. If the EVIC is installed the tire pressure readout should have been included.

Is it a seperate display than the standard evic? As in you have two little screens up there? Is there any chance we could get a picture? Thanks for answers to any of the questions. :)

There's no extra screen -- It appears on the EVIC display. Pressing the Step button on the EVIC cycles through a number of displays. Adding this option to the EVIC gives another option/display to Step through.

Thanks!
So now I am wondering what the difference in the EVIC is, could it be a simple programming change? I have a sport but it came with the evic as an option, it would be nice to add the tire pressure display, especially if it is an easy add on.

Thanks guys, good info.
I have the EVIC and as I stated, when I blew the tires,
it displayed "Low Tire Pressure" and showed a cutaway
of an under inflated tire on the overhead screen.
But I would like to see the actual individual PSIs.
This would make me happy.
I have read thru this thread, but what do you think I would
specifically have to do now to have this modded/updated???
(can't ask dealer for info, like talking to a brick wall)
I would like to tell the dealer what specifically what to do.
Thanks.

Contact a different dealer. Eventually you'll find one with a clue.
