Stopped in at the local auto parts store for a fuse and talked myself into a K & N High Flow air filter. The reference book didn’t list one for the 2006 but I assume the 2005 is the same. I had a Piper-X cone on my TDI and liked it. The K & N I bought is an element rather than a cone. Also bought 2 Purolator Pure One oil filters. Oh, yeah…and the dang fuse. |

Only problem is that paper filters better. Cummins reported cylinder scoring from dirt particles with K&N filters.Cummins has a particulate filtering standard and they specifically mention K&N as not acceptable. That is to say,the K&N is specifically not approved by Cummins. There is aother wet filter that meets their standard of filtration but I've forgotten what it is. One would suppose that a K&N would have a similar history with a Motori diesel. |

Here's a link: http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=33-2233 I see no mention of its filtering capabilities in terms of microns. |

I see no mention of its filtering capabilities in terms of microns. I'd stay away from the K&N filters as well since they don't filter the dirt as well as the OEM paper filter. Several threads on this board of silica in the oil samples taken with running a K&N. IMHO, I thought of running with K&N but the information on the forums here made me change my mind. |

Take it back. In dusty areas (or anywhere for that matter) they just don't filter fine enough for a daily driver that you want to get a lot of miles out of. |

Thanks---I’ll look for something else (recommendations?). My only other concern about the filter would be the oil trashing my MAF. I replaced my MAF on the ol’ TDI around 200k. I do like that turbo to breathe. |

I use a K&N out of a grand cherokee, but only for highway use in the winter. I have a whole stack of fram filters for the summer fun. normally I would not bother but it gets significantly better mileage with it in, I simply can't stand to get less than 22MPG. I saw that AEM has a intake kit out now for the CRD, and if it gets good reviews I will be buying one. the stock air intake is too restrictive from what I have learned so far, diesels use all the air they can get. |

I had a cone setup on my 2004 Volvo, but I put the factory air box and filter back in when I gave it to my mom. The cone filter setup gave me an increase of about 5mpg on the highway! I have used K&N filters on gassers with very good results. I understand the part about the oil affecting the MAF on the TDI, but why is everyone stating that they let in huge amounts of dirt? I mean I am not saying that is not true, but I would like to see some scientific evidence to prove that. Does anyone know of any articles on this subject? |

The results of a controlled test are available online somewhere. A variety of filters (4 paper, 2 foam...I think) were installed on the same vehicle driven over the same roads for a set mileage. Particles captured & passed were measured per filter. The difference between filters within the paper or foam groups was small but the difference between the two groups were significant. The foam filters passed significantly more dirt than paper. Further, the restriction of each was measured and the foam filters did not drastically lessen flow restriction in comparison to paper, although they did lead all the paper filters. I don't remember where this was (i'll look when i have time). May have been on Bobistheoilguy.com, or maybe a link from there. I've seen other reports but this was the most convincing bit of evidence I've come across. It seems to me that foam filters have the flow advantage at likely great cost to longevity. They may be of value on the racetrack, but they won't be going into my car. Their popularity is only the result of their particularly plausible advantage combined with a lack of objective info. |

This K & N is cotton, FWIW. Also, I am running Rotella T 5w-40 and change every 5k (just did my 2nd change) with lots of easy highway miles. |

okay, here is what google pops up from the K&N site. There is nothing wrong with these filters, except the fact of them being wet filters may not be a good choice in some applications. They do mention the micron size range. http://www.knfilters.com/efficiency_testing.htm |

Like our schtinky diesels? Thanks for the link but it does seem to make just a general statement. I bought the filter because of "brand recognition" or whatever they call it. K & N always had a good reputation (or maybe that just shows what little I know). |

Dear Customer, Air filters are not rated by micron size on an absolute basis. (See technical service bulletin 89-5R from the Filter Manufacturer's Council) The proper rating system for air filters is a testing procedure developed to measure the efficiency of the filtration media at varying micron sizes. We routinely subject a sample of our air filters to this testing procedure conducted by independent laboratories. The primary purpose of this testing is to ensure that our air filter designs meet or exceed automotive industry standards. These filtration tests are performed in accordance with the Society of Automotive Engineer's (SAE) J726 testing procedure. The content of the test dust used in accordance with the testing procedure follows: Particle Size in Microns % by Volume (+/- 3%) <5.5 13 5.5 to 11 11 11 to 22 13 22 to 44 19 44 to 88 28 88 to 176 16 Our testing has demonstrated that on average, K&N air filters have an overall efficiency rating of between 97 and 99%. With proper cleaning K&N air filters will protect your engine for the life of your vehicle. For more information about this and other questions you may have about K&N filters, please visit our website a www.knfilters.com and go to http://knfilters.com/facts.htm. Thank you. That's probably a different story; I was referring to the foam type. |

The K & N LOOKS a lot like the one Jay posted a link to, but that one suggests a stronger diesel application. |

This was the second time I found this on my KJ. 1st time I cleaned it out, cleaned and reoiled the filter and found same results again.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I do drive in very dusty conditions often and on other vehicles of mine that were only street driven w/ a K&N, I didn't notice this type of problem. I also have Not seen any kind of performance change since switching from K&N back to WIX. This is all i needed to see to make a decision about the K&N |
