Post subject:  HELP...tranny fluid low and didn't even know it!

Well, I finally got around to checking my tranny fluid the proper way. I had checked it before after sitting all night and she appeared to be full....but just 5 mins ago, I drove about 20 miles, came back, put er in park, left her running, and pulled the dipstick, wiped dipstick and reinserted it, waited for a few seconds and pulled it back out, OUCH...it is only on the second hole which reads "cold" (just above the hole for "add"). Anyone know how much fluid I need to put in? I think this explains why my tranny hasn't been shifting so smooth. The car was def at operating temp and had been for quite a while. How long should I have left it in park before checking? It was only in park for about 45 seconds when I pulled the dipstick while running.

I've always checked them in neutral. The dipstick should be marked as to check it in park or neutral.

Well, it says to check it in Park...which I did. Since I had been driving for a while it should have been in the Hot range, not cold. Maybe I didn't let it sit long enough after running it. A friend of mine said I should have just left it sit for 5 mins in park and then checked it. Well, I picked up two quarts of ATF+4 when I was out tonight. I will recheck tomorrow and if needed I will add.
