Hey Gang, always hear people mention this as a "drag" of owning the CRD but don't hear many mention what they do help situation.

Question:
What are the top two or three things folks can do to minimize(eliminate?) the turbo delay?
1)
2)
3)
?

And I'm talking mechanically. I don't consider doing brake torque's at every stop pratical.
:D

Thanks as always,
WWV

Seems like Rolling into the Throttle instead of Stomping on the Go pedal helps.

Some of the "Diesel Modules" are supposed to help also.

InMotion Tuning says they can change the program itself and negate the issue.

I think the the ESP ( when it activates ) gives the same feeeling or worse. If I know I am going to have to give it the go pedal to pull into traffic from a standstill...I disengage the ESP.

Try unplugging the EGR flow control valve. I am pretty sure part of the lag comes from the valve when it is choking the intake for EGR operation.

Its probably built into the ECM to limit power on take off to save tires and driveline components. Subaru built in a similar lag a couple years ago on their Impreza and greatly reduced warranty claims for transmission & driveline repairs.

Sounds stupid I know, we'd all rather see heavier duty running gear to go with our 300 ft/lbs...but that's not always an option for auto manafacturers who constantly look for more ways to keep manafacturing costs down. So even if it is possible to remove this lag, do you think the tranny can handle it? I dunno.

Personally I love the kick in the pants you get 1/2 way accross an intersection all with only a hint of tire spin. With my winter tires on now, my traction control will kick in when this kick in the pants occours!!! Fun, fun.

It has been said that it was done to help with EPA Emission numbers. It does not allow you to load up and smoke (pun intended) the line.

My 2005 without ESP gives you the kick in the pants WITH lots of tire spin. Especially if you are turning into the bargain. And since my driveway comes out onto the (4-lane, 60 mph) road, I do the takeoff-from-stop-with-turn-too often. It is always either a real test of your nerve to do it with throttle feathered enough to avoid the spin while the big truck is bearing down on ya. I get to make the decision often: test my nerves or go for the shrieking/smoking-tire thrills.

hahaha LOL yeah this sounds familiar. I like it though when you're pulling across the intersection and all of a sudden you get
END OF TURBO LAG that's part of the reason turbo's are so fun!

Seriously to answer your question though...standard items to reduce turbo lag include anything to help the turbo spool FASTER. This means: Free flowing intake, free flowing exhaust, more fuel (chip). Do those 3 and you can rock and roll. Our intake and exhaust apparently aren't too bad from the factory so here is my rating (please take with a grain of salt though because I haven't actually tried any of this on my personal CRD:

1-Chip
2-Exhaust (full exhaust will make more of a difference than just a cat-back)
3-Intake
