I bought my CRD with 330 miles and the sticker on the window said next service 6250. Does that sound right? Also what oil does the factory use? |

Look at your service manual and then determine whether you fall into schedule A or schedule B maintenance. It will have the suggested correct oil change interval for your driving style. You'll find people doing oil changes on average anywhere from 8K to 12K. The users manual also suggests Mobil 1 synthetic 0-40W |

I use Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5w-40 and change every 3,000-3,500. Maybe a little often but oil changes are cheap, engines are not. |

6,250 is schedule B for most everyone except for maybe my grandmother. 3,000 miles is overkill using Rotella T Synthetic 5w-40 and diesel go twice the distance on an oil change then a gasoline engine. |

You will find the oil will get heavily soot laden, the major factor limiting the OCI. Had the factory spec 0W40 in mine twice, both times I dropped it in under 6K miles because the oil felt like rubbing compound. EGR diesels are bad for soot contamination. You don't want to stretch the OCI's with this type of diesel, especially if you run the recommended 0W40. The alternative, 5W40 products are designed for high soot diesel applications and hopefully ULSD will help control the soot production. |

My Dealer likes to schedule oil changes at 3250 mile intervals. I suspect because they make so much more money doing them for the CRD than they get for the gassers. They keep the special Mobil 1 oil for the CRD in a locked, glass display case outside the parts department as if it were art or jewelry. |

I perform my own oil changes (using 5W40 Rotella-T Synthetic) anywhere between 5700--6200 miles. The first fuel filter change was around 15k miles. Greg |

If you are doing oil changes less than 7500-10000 miles (or 1 year) you are basically wasting your money. Countless oil analysis show greater wear with frequent oil changes...more wear ppm in first 3,000 miles after an oil change than thereafter. |

Never heard that before. Is there a supporting theory that explains it? |

Is there a supporting theory that explains it? The same has been true with my diesels, I have never owned a diesel that I changed the oil in less the 10,000 miles except initial break in oil. All that said it is the individuals time & money and if that is what makes him feel right with the world then why should we care. |

Uh huh... I was @ a dealer yesterday. This one wanted $12/quart for that stuff. Total charge after oil, filter and labor... was a few dollars over $100. I left. |

They used mobile 1 and charged me $89.99, as always. Is there a cheaper way to get the oil changed? I mean I dont wanna go to one of those speedy oil change places, but my god $90!! I guess thats normal though, the local Goodyear store quoted my almost the same. I do mine every 6000 miles. Every 3000 is little killer |

I do mine every 6000 miles. Every 3000 is little killer Back corner of Walmart, @ $15/gal for Rotella 5W40 synthetic, premium oil filter from NAPA @ $6. So for $36 and some quality time from the owner, it can be done. The last time, mine was already at the dealer for recall work and I didn't have the time to mess with it myself. Brought them 2 gal of Rotella, they used a $15 Mopar oil filter, had them change the fuel filter (another $47), and give it a good once-over inspection at the same time. Total bill was @ $120. |

I buy the Rotella at WallMart and take it to the dealer it cost $24.75 after taxes for the change and $15 for the filter. So that comes to about $60 a change. Better than the $90 for using the dealers oil but still costly. |

Look at it this way. The gas Libbys need this chance twice as often as we do. Divide $60/2, and you get $30. The price of a gas liberty oil change. |

Wow! 2 Gallons of Shell Rotella Synthetic 5W-40 and an oil filter was only $39.10 at Wal-Mart. Take that, dealer! |

Only problem with that is the post that came out I believe last month where a DC mechanic coming out of class warned us about a filter problem out there where some of the filters supposedly made for the diesel are in fact not up to specs and have had filter medium problems. Seems the filters shed into the lube system if you don't use the correct filters. I believe he also listed the correct filters by company of manufacture. |

I would like to see this information. I have been performing oil analysis at different mileage intervals and although I'm not completely "dialed in" on my best OCI yet this is what I'm leaning towards: I'll change my oil somewhere between 5,000 and 8,000 miles. My issue is levels of silicon (dirt) that accumulate in the oil over time. At 5,000 miles there's no issues; at 10,000 miles silicon levels are too high. Oh yeah, I'm changing my air filter every 5,000 miles; I don't think there's much life left in them after that. I've checked the integrity of the air intake system...it's fine, no leaks. |

KJBob my guess is the reason for the high Si is airbox, I had the same spike in Si on our CRD. My original thought was improper install of airfilter by tech, however my CRD air box has been replaced once and still doesn't seem to seal properly. The lid seems to come loose at the back side after few thousand miles and needs to be reinstalled. The lid will not stay up firmly in the slots at the back side. The dealer replaced the original after they and myself could not get the lid to stay in place and our forcing it finally broke the box. I just picked up the '02 air box today and plan on installing it tonight after supper, as it is suppose to rain tonight and all day tomorrow. The wife will be on the road tomorrow (70 miles one way) so it should be a quick test. |

Oldnavy, what's the difference between the '02 airbox and the newer ones? No slots in the back? If so, I'd be game to give that a try. Also, where did you get the '02 airbox? Good luck. |
