Well your not going to believe this. I brought my crd in for the f37 recall and upon getting it back I noticed in the service write up it said "Replace CAT Converter and reprogram TCM and PCM" I questioned that to the service writer and he said "Yea, they replaced the cat as part of a recall". However I told him it was in for a Torque converter F37 recall. It did say in the notes that the torque convertor was replaced and pcm and tcm were reprogramed. He kind of had a puzzled look on his face, then said, "Uh Yea. they replaced the TC." Howerver upon bringing the CRD to my buddys shop to see if he could replace the cat, he said"Sure we could do it for ya, looks pretty easy, but why would you want it done it was just replaced" Had the stickers with part numbers on and all. Sure sounds differnt to. So looks like I got a new TC and CAT convertor thanks to a typo by a service writer. |

Sounds like they were unclear as to the difference between the Torque Converter and the Catalytic Converter and replaced the wrong thing. I ask, because I'm not aware of any recall to replace the catalytic converter. |

It surprised me to when he said there was a catalytic recall. Then he asked me if it was a diesel. And basically got this dumbfounded look on his face when i told him it was. Wouldnt be the first time they did work that wasnt needed. Heck, I brought it in to get the AC lines fixed after they broke them and instead of fixing the AC lines, they fixed the fuel rail and o-rings on the injectors. I know ill hear to switch dealers, but this is my 2nd one. Im kind of out of options now, no others around me are certified to work on diesels. Im not 100% sure they replaced the TC, but they definatly did the TCM PCM flash. Is there any way to tell? |

The more shiz I read here the more I wonder how much longer DC is going to be in business. I love my CRD for the most part-- but these dealers... If DC wants to save itself it would be better off selling cars direct to consumer and licensing repair shops to work on them. The dealers have to go... and so do the DC bean counters. |

Won't be as dumbfounded a look as when DC's warranty-return parts clerk opens the box looking for a torque converter and finds a smashed cat. |

Won't be as dumbfounded a look as when DC's warranty-return parts clerk opens the box looking for a torque converter and finds a smashed cat. With that kind of dealership expertise out in the wild, I'm now waiting to hear that a CRD owner left the dealership after the F37 recall and upon experiencing unusually loud exhaust noise, looked under their vehicle to find a TC welded inline where the cat should be. It will of course, be spinning at high rpm due to the exhaust gas flow through it. But a series of staccato blasts on the exhaust revealed that the TC refused to lock-up properly at highway speeds, leading to erratic exhaust pulsing and surging speeds at constant accelerator pedal pressure. When shutting the engine off, there is a loud whine, similar to a jet engine, which lasts for several minutes after the occupants have left the vehicle. Some CRD owners will object to this and demand satisfaction. TSB at 11. |

the cat should be under warranty to 100K miles (same with EGR). as in, if its bad you get a new one. its the law regarding emission equipment, thanks to the EPA. |

If you can find that in writing, let us know. |

If you can find that in writing, let us know. sorry, it's 8 years 80K miles according to the EPA. I thought I saw 100K on emissions somewhere, my bad. http://www.epa.gov/otaq/consumer/warr95fs.txt my other car, a jetta, is going in for a free cat replacment since it has a code P0420, this week. |

It is probably just the service writer that doesn' t know what he is talking about. They probably noticed the banged up CAT when they were under there taking the tranny apart, and wrote in to replace it. IIRC, it is against the law for them to let it out of there with damaged emissions equipment when the vehicle is under warranty. That is probably all that happened...the service writer just didn't know what the heck he was talking about. |

I do believe if it was damaged off-roading that it would certainly not be eligible for any type of warranty claim. Greg |
