Post subject:  Handling Issues

OK since we got the car which was about 3 weeks ago we noticed that while travelling along if you were to take your foot of the gas pedal you could feel the car dip/pull to the right and when you put your foot back on the gas pedal it would dip/pull to the left.

Also while driving you felt as though you would be fighting with the steering as it wants to tug either left of right.

Now after getting the moog ball joints fitted which has smoothed out all the issues related to that but it seems to have accentuated the dip/pull characeristics of the vehicle.

Took it into the dealers today and the mechanic took it for a test drive straight away he could feel what we were on about. which is always a help. Anyway he reckons it is down to a worn bush somewhere either where the axle joins the diff or along that line anyway he lost me abit when he started to get all technical.

Does this problem sound familiar to anyone and do they know the cause.

thanks
Fiona.

Get someone to wiggle the wheel back and forth and watch for slack/movement at any bushings and joints. Especially check the tie rod ends, that would be my guess. Did you have it aligned after the moogs were installed? Any alignment shop should pick up on a problem like this before they complete the alignment.

anyone else any ideas. As this concerns me as to what the problem could be.

I'd thinking that somethings always pulling slightly to the right but when you accelerate you overpower it - check tire pressures to make sure they're balanced right to left and when you stop feel the brake rotors and see if one feels hotter - like it's been dragging.
A bushing could do it - but it would be inside an axle or CV joint and I don't know of a way to check that - you normally have funny noises with those.

some had loose engine mounts, when you accelerate the engine may be twisting on its mounts causing what you feel, the 2.8 certainly generates enough torque.

Once had a GC that pull to the right a little and had it checked. Turned out to be a tire with a carcass that was disintegrating internally. It was found by swapping the front tires left to right and right to left. Then, it pulled to the left. This is not your problem, just thought you might find this interesting. If this same situation was on the rear axle I don't know how the vehicle would act.

I think your problem might be in the rear suspension. If one of the links has a loose bushing on one side that is loose but not making noise it could cause what you descibe. When you apply power the loose side shifts forward and when you let off it shifts backward steering from the rear a little to change the direction of the vehicle.

I also installed Moogs on the front and got rid of the ponderous on center steering at highway speed. Also more precision when going around a curve at speed.

Thanks guys I am going to give the dealer his chance to correct whatever it is causing this. When he took the motor for a test drive it appeared he knew the cause as if he has had other Jeeps with the same fault.

If however he can find no cure them I will start reeling off to him the other possible causes.

Did he ever find a cure for the problem? If so, what was it?

yes I got a cure for the problem.

You wouldn't believe it but as mentioned in another post while getting the moog BJ fitted they broke the ABS sensor. Was a few days before I got it replaced.

I was running around whitout the ABS sensors working. At the same time a whole load of other funny things started to happen like th etrip computer not working outside temp gauge not working handling issues.

It would appear that the ABS sensor is part of a loop of sensors and once the new one was installed all my problems went away and everything started to work.
