Post subject:  MD/FL Road Trip Milage Report

FROM LAUREL, MD TO ST AUGUSTINE, FL:

Total Fuel Used: 30.916 US Gal

Total Miles Traveled: 749.6

Average mpg: 24.25 mpg

This is with about 97% highway driving. We hit stop-and-go traffic in Alexandria, VA for a while so that probably affected mpg. Here is how the trip broke down. I set criuse to maintain 75mph but several times had to increase it to 79 mph to keep from being run off the road.

I started on a full tank of fuel from my local BP in laurel, MD which is power-blend ULSD fuel (winterized).

1st Fuel stop was at the Hess station off I-95 South exit 181 in South Carolina. The CRD took 17.528 gallons of fuel and the trip odo showed 403.3 miles traveled which equates to 23 mpg. Several factors for this lower than expected figure.a) this was winterized fuel b) I wound up idling for 15-20 mins in the morning as I could not get my wife moving c) the 30-45 mins of stop-and-go traffic going through VA.

2nd fuel stop was at another hess in Fruit Cove, FL. The CRD took 13.388 Gallons and showed 346.3 on the trip odo. This equates to 25.87 mpg which is more like what I would expect.

I had the vehicle loaded pretty good. My mother was also along for the trip and we had our 5 week old daughter Samantha and all her baby gear.

I made the exact same trip last march in my Jetta TDI and found that the milage going down was quite a bit lower than the return milage (44 vs. 51)

The CRD has about 9100 miles on the clock. I am pretty tired right now so please let me know if I left off any crucial details. The return trip info will be updated after our return trip has been completed next week.

ANOTHER NOTE: It was so cold when we left this morning, that after about 30 mins of highway driving, we hit stop-and-go traffic and the temp guage on the CRD began to drop from just under the half mark all the way back down to just above the 1/4 mark. This may have also affected the fuel economy.

FROM ST AUGUSTINE, FL TO LAUREL, MD (includes around town mileage while in St. Augustine, FL):

TOTAL FUEL USED: 41.662 US GALLONS

TOTAL MILES TRAVELED: 987.2

AVERAGE FUEL ECONOMY: 23.7 MPG

DETAILS:

1) 18.845 GAL - 464.4 Miles = 24.64 mpg (Kangaroo ULSD, I-95 N exit 53 in SC)

2) 14.109 GAL - 346.3 Miles = 24.54 mpg (Carson, VA Shell ULSD)

3) 8.708 GAL - 176.5 Miles = 20.27 mpg NOTE: This seems to prove what others have said about Shell ULSD.

The mpg look pretty good except for the last one. I have read in other places that Shell ULSD seems to yield poor fuel economy and a noisier engine. I can't say anything on the noise, but I have to say that 20.27 mpg is my worst milage to date. I will not be using Shell ever again.

On the return trip, I set cruise at 80 mph only slowing down when nescessary. There were some fairly steep grades going through VA which may have reduced my fuel economy slightly. My mother stayed in Florida so only me, my wife, and our 1-month-old made the return trip.

This mileage is after cleaning a totally caked up MAP sensor while in FL. Milage is not too far off from the milage going down though.

I cleaned the map sensor with MAF sensor cleaner while down here. When I removed it, it was gooked up pretty bad with 9100 miles on the clock. Almost but not quite totally clogged with soot. We will see if this helps my milage on the return trip.

You may want to disconnect the battery for 15 or 20 minutes as well. Give the PCM a chance to start using fresh sensor data to adjust fuel ratios.

Thanks, I will give that a try.

The poor engine sucks down Shell diesel likes water. :(

I couldn't believe how quick that tank went after I gave my uncle a visit...

I filled up with Shell ULSD the day after having an Aero Turbine muffler installed in order to check fuel mileage. Got roughly 20 MPG more than half crusing at 65-70 on local freeways. I suspect my best fuel economy comes from Murphy LSD. Will try QuickTrip next.

Well, I have proof that cleaning the MAP sensor should be done with every oil change as oldnavy suggested. My rig turned over 14k today and the last couple of days I noticed that it was sluggish with hardly any power. There was air in the fuel system which I bled out, the MAP sensor was totally sooted again...this time it was all dry soot and it was done right after a long drive with the vehicle. I also took out the Tru flow air filter because it needs to be cleaned...so my like-new factory filter is back in. Will see how it performs tomorrow as I have to take a 160+ mile trip to California, MD.

nobluescreen, how did you make out after cleaning that sensor? I just did mine for the first time, and it was easy. Mine has 12K on it and I am not sure if it was ever cleaned as I bought it used. It was full of soot, a dry soot that came off easily with carb cleaner. I did not notice any running problems or fuel mileage loss, as I got 27mpg on a trip from Somerset, PA to Claymont, DE on I-76. I filled it to the top and when I filled it again I filled it to the top and I got 27.2mpg averaging 65mph on cruise. I just replaced my air filter today as well, so I am curious how you made out.

My fuel filter wound up being partially clogged too...but I replaced that I it is running like a champ. You should use carb cleaner to clean that sensor is it can leave a residue....best to get the MAF sensor or electronic parts cleaner that says specifically on the bottle that it leaves no residue. Plan on cleaning that MAP sensor every time you do an oil change.

Do you know anyone else who is looking for a nice 06 limited CRD with 15k on it? I am getting ready to sell mine due to a job change....I have to get something smaller.
