At least I haven't seen these 2 mentioned. I take my CRD to the dealer for standard service - I consider it part of the warranty cost - however I take off the Provent - not that I expect it to be a problem - but I'd rather not have it as a issue. (their only comments on the lift have been that it looks good) Problem 1) So it had been ~35F overnight and it was about 40F when I started working - removed the hose clamp - gave a slight twist and pull on the Nylabraid - and the end of the CCV broke off - I really didn't pull too hard - but the CCV is plastic and the adhesion to the Nylabraid was fairly strong so it broke. So I plug the end to the air intake and make a temporary vent to keep fumes from blowing oil all over the engine - I notice.... Problem 2) The radiator overflow tank is dark.. - I pop the lid...Oil .. I check the engine dipstick - slightly low no foam. - okay I've seen this a couple of times on gas engines - a blown head gasket or a cracked block I'm not happy (I later checked the service manual - I do have a 3rd option - the CRD has an Oil cooler that runs engine coolant -if that blew a gasket or cracked it's a simple fix - the cleanup won't be simple - it's messy) Anyway - duct taped CCV together - drove to dealer - said fix (they of course started with the F37 recall - it's on their computer) I'll let you know the end results - of note - it was running great (this was 31,000 mile service) no check engine light no warning lights at all no codes Engine never overheated - center of temp gauge the entire time 250 mile on 1/2 a tank of diesel as I pulled into the dealer. |

We had a Case 680G backhoe... older then myself that had the coaxial engine oil cooler do that. Its very possible. they are not that cheap either that part alone was about $400. plus we pulled the heads first because thats what we figured it was and a gasket set for that 336 ci 4 cylinder is about $400. Needless to say it was not a cheap fix, but you should be under warranty and not have any problems. K |

Are you getting any abnormal pressurization in the surge tank? Keep in mind that the contents are already under pressure but excess pressure should relieve itself through the overflow tube. Detroit Diesel uses the same style heat exchanger on buses (but much larger) and I have seen a few leak. It's usually a gasket and normally from a sloppy install. Normally you will see very fine antifreeze droplets mixed into the oil on the dipstick (you have to look very carefully to see them) when this happens. If they don't want to service this problem until it looks more noticable, I would pull an oil sample for analysis to be on the safe side. One other thing to check is casting sand in he tank which is also dark. Some here have needed this to be flushed. |

The diagnosis is the oil cooler - they're also going to change out the radiator (probably easier than trying to clean it) and of course the parts are on back order so - I'll probably get it back next week. FYI - I checked the dipstick I was looking for foam - I did not look close enough to see small droplets so I don't know if they were there - and the oil in the overflow tank was obvious - that wasn't questioned. |

Just make sure you change your oil when the job is done. Most of the time you get some fluid exchange both ways through that type of leak. |
