Post subject:  Turbocharger went bad *FIXED*

Brought the CRD to the dealer yesterday for a variety of issues, oil on the side of the motor (passenger) was one of them. They called me today and told me that the Turbocharger needs to be replaced. Is this a really bad thing? Should I be concerned? Any hoses I should check?

Thanks,
Daniel

Have them replace the CAC hose with the newly designed one if you can. Have them clean the MAF and MAP sensors. Have them check the CAC (Intercooler) to see if it full of oil.

Do you have any idea of the capacity of the intercooler? Although I have some oil filming in the CAC hose, I have never "missed" any oil on the dip stick.

I'm curious, do you religiously perform a idle turbo cooldown as specified in the owners manual?

We have since day one, but as time goes by, I can see where some might get lazy on that.

Did they give any ideas on the cause? And what failed?

No they didnt say anything. I didnt really know what to say either though since I was really suprised. I just hope that the bad Turbocharger, coating my engine with oil, wont cause any longterm problems.

So far this Jeep hasnt caused me too much trouble, other than a TC and now the Turbo, but if it keeps going bad I will sell it for sure.

Did you have any oil dripping on the ground/floor under your Jeep? Just wondering how they say a turbo went bad when it was seemingly still providing boost. My engine has a thin buildup of oil/dirt on the passenger side as well, but my level on the dipstick does not drop noticeably and I have no leaks on the floor.

Just seems weird that out of the blue they say the turbo is bad. I'd want a detailed explanation as to why/how.

I try and get a detailed explanation on why the turbo went bad. I am going back to the dealer in about 30minutes to test drive with a technician because the vehicle is pulling to the right. They said the new turbo wont be in until Tuesday the earliest.

This is how my CAC hose looks like. That is the CAC hose right? I was pretty shocked when I touched it earlier because it is completely soaked with oil.

If you are not running a CCV filter or EHM then that is to be expected-- it is what most stock systems will look like. The oil in the CAC may not have much of anything to do with the turbo. You could get a new turbo and have the same amount of oil being spit into the CAC. The new CAC is solid black, not orange, though-- so it makes it harder to see the oil. You see, if you can't see it--- must not be a problem. DC hard at work solving your problems for you...

Is there a HOW TO for a EHM somewhere? I checked FAQ section and Tech Articles Forum.

I just pulled my CAC hose today for regular maintenance - that's exactly how it looks with a Provent installed. My Provent is catching plenty of oil and its output hose to the turbo input is clean and dry. The oil in mine is from the turbo seals. Dealer says its normal. I suspect these AFC valves cycling during their open/close movement (to bring in egr gas) are causing pressure waves to backup in the turbo compressor, up against the seals and eventually weakening them to the point where they leak excessive engine oil.

My turbo was completely replaced about 2 weeks ago. We always give the turbo proper time to cool down.

My brothers 2005 CRD had the turbo fail last week. It is still in the shop. He said it simply lost power and made a little funny noise. He is not very mechanically inclined, and he immediately took it in before I could see it. He has about 30k miles on his and is very good about maintenance through the dealer. I wonder if the dealer has been using only the proper synthetic oil that is specified. They offered him oil changes for life, or something similiar, when he bought to move the thing off the lot, so I would bet the dealer is putting in cheapo oil. He does not have any mods on his rig except for an aftermarket muffler.

He has had a number of problems with his and it has spent atleast 3 weeks in the shop. Luckily he has an extended warranty which provides a rental car immediately upon drop off.

Makes you wonder.

had to wait over a week for the turbo charger to come in, its SUPPOSED to be here tomorrow, along with a new CAC hose.

I too waited over a week. About 11 or 12 days to be exact. My CRD has about 32K miles on it. The service mgr. stated something about the turbo being on "Galactic Backorder."

I'm curious as to what Garrett Turbo Model is being used, did they specify a model on the Repair Order?
