Ran across this while doing a Google search for VNT info. Pretty nifty little page, may become useful in the future http://www.technologie-entwicklung.de/G ... turbo.html |

Yes indeed, this looks very similar to the CRD and mine looks to be the same for soot deposit which was minimal. One thing I noticed was the turbine can be pushed against the side of the housing on both the input and output side of the impeller, the bearings felt smooth and free of defects. Does any one know if the bearing assy is rubber mounted? |

You shouldn't have any rubber materials inside or even near the bearing assembly as it wouldn't take the heat. That link show the most important failure aspect of a VGT, soot build-up inside the internal workings controlling the pitch of the vanes. Both the mechanical guts will coke with oil residue & soot along with the exhaust side becomming coated effecting the sweep area where the vanes move. This is the kind of teardown I would like to have done to mine given the amount of oil I was seeing passed from the compressor side. My mechanical hunch is it was passing just as much oil through the back side seal, mixing with soot and making a gooy mess of this internal hardware. It would be only a matter of time before this starts sticking and failed. |

RFCRD. Even though your a thankful ex-CRD owner, I appreciate your on-going participation on this board and the continual industry experience you share with L.O.S.T on the CRD. |
