| Post subject: | Building a winch bumper |
I just got my jeep lifted and bought a Warn m8000 when I bought the lift. I was planning on putting it on my Willys but then I found a guy who is going to build me a custom bumper for the KJ. I want to base mine off the new ARB bumper but without all the angles coming down towards the frame. I have a few questions that I need answered before we get started: 1) How do you get the bumper off without destroying it too bad? 2) How does ARB mount the bumper? do they have a weld-on/bolt-on bracket or what? 3) Should I weld on a bracket to bolt my bumper to or should I do all bolt-on? 4) Will my OME heavy duty gas springs support my CRD and winch bumper? I plan on using 1/4" brackets and 3/16" for the rest. I will be cutting the bumper up to use the stock markers. I will post pics as soon I we start |

Most aftermarket bumpers bolt up in the same holes that a front Draw Tite Hitch mounts. Also, the reason ARB, TrailReady ect have so many "angles" in their designs, it for looks BUT they also add strength. Basically you build a bumper and build a pair of "brackets". The brackets bolt on the uniframe and also bolt to the bumper. Good Luck! |

OME Gas HD Springs will no be good enough, you'll need the new 500lbs springs. You will probably net 0 on your lift with the gas springs, bumper, and winch. I'm really interested to see your bumper, so far I don't love the ARB but I'd someday like a bumper. I don't want my bumper to stick out as far as the ARB does. |

I decided I'm going to cut the entire bumper out of a 10' piece of 3/16", 4"x6" box steel. I will be paying my trusty machine shop buddies to make some precision plasma cuts and bends and also have them fab up some brackets. I figure $400 is a good price to pay for a bro-deal winch bumper. Hopefully it gets rolling soon, people are way too busy to meet my scheduling needs... |

So are you thinking something like a single long piece of box steel with a couple of notches cut out to allow bends to wrap backwards on the sides of the Jeep? Have you thought about a front reciever hitch? What are you thinking about to recovery and tow points? How about light mounts? You said a piece of box steel, any plans for the front approach skid of the bumper? |
