If you are a DIY guy, be careful with the bleeder screw. They seem to be very sensitive on tightening them...

I think the wix part is 33647:

You guys need to check out the Cat fuel filter adaptor. It allows for install of the Cat 2 micron filter that will not pass anything above the size of 2 micron. Anything above the 7 micron size is a no-no in a common rail diesel system, the OEM filter is 10 micron nominal and 20 or 30 micron absolute filter and breaks down with slighest moisture ion the fuel. An added plus is that the filters are about $15 or 1/2 te price the OEM filter and will easy last 20,000 to 30,000 miles when reletive clean fuel is used. That is fuel that has been prefiltered at the pump to remove any of the large stuff.

I look forward to ordering one, but... NAPA is open and my filter is clogged today :P Greg can't get one to me before I head to work in the morning.

As an aside, it says this in the shop manual:
The fuel filter/water separator assembly is located in the left rear corner of the engine compartment. It incorporates the fuel system prime button, bleed screw, fuel temperature sensor, fuel heater and a water in fuel (WIF) sensor. Only the fuel filter canister and the WIF sensor are serviced separately. The fuel filter has a 3 micron element and tightens clockwise to the housing.

Is that a lie or are they using "new" math?

My guess is new math, but Greg is the one who talked to the head science guy at the fuel lab, but I think he said it 10 micron nominal. I have never heard of a paper fuel filter that could filter below 10 or 15 micron. It could just be a misprint like the 4 quarts needed to fill th tranny after replacing filters and torque converter that the FSM states. That was off by about about 5 qts, as it takes about 9 or 9.5 quarts to fill after tranny service.

The 3 micron rating is probably what the engineers spec'd out, as it made it to the FSM, but you know how that goes... Torque converters, fuel filters and many other parts can be substituted with lower quality parts - without notification. But as with all specs, 3 micron is not actually 3 micron unless you see a standards based test mentioned, and the words absolute instead of nominal. Retmil46 and I have NH 5 micron filters to use, but now that the CAT 2 micron filter is available, it's the best filtering solution available for our CRD's.

I have located (someone posted the link here) a filter head assembly that I can use on the old MB to adapt a Cat 2 micron for it later. I just need to work out how to plumb it in after the main fuel filter.

My local NAPA (SE distribution hub) disavowed their existence, so I ordered a CAT conversion. They have no specs since they are a figment of the aftermarket imagination

I just ordered one of these NAPA filters on Saturday and it came in today. They really do exist. I have it in hand.

Post subject:  fuel flow

Since everyone is talking about the Cat 2 micron filter which sounds great, is there a problem using this setup on our CRD's? Owning 5 Dodge/Cummins rigs, the biggest thing was using a small micron rated filter, but you still need to have ample fuel flow to cool the injection pumps, in the older VP44 pumped Dodges anyway. I know we don't have to worry about injection pumps on these, but will it restrict our fuel flow too much using a 2 micron filter? Just wondering if anyone has done any testing in this regard. I would love to find a bolt on replacement filter set up for my rig, the OEM set up is an air sucker to say the least!!

This filter was designed for large Cat V8 twin turbo diesels, with 3 to 5 times the engine size, the CRD will never be able to pull close to that kind of volume of fuel. So do not even worry about will it flow enough fuel. Lifespan on the CRD should be 20,000 miles easy and on the VW TDI's 30,000 was nothing unusual, I cut one open that had 15,000 miles on it with our 1.9L TDI and it was only about 1/3 used.
