| Post subject: | Amsoil 5w30 Diesel oil? |
Has anyone tried the Amsoil 5w30 diesel oil? It says it is ideal for EGR engines. I used to use Mobil 1 5w30 inmy Volvo diesels and had excellent results with it. Just curious if the Amsoil oil is worth a try or if I should stick with the 0w40 or 5w40 specified in the manual. Thanks |

I use the Amsoil HDD Series 3000 5w-30. It is perfect for our CRDs and actually better qualities than the newer "Euro Amsoil CJ oil" that is now out. It is a bit more expensive but with the AMSOIL oil filter, you should easily be able to extend your oil changes. I got two gallons with my last order...cheaper by the gallon. Add the new Amsoil Air Filter and you will be set. |

WWV I ran Mobil 1 5w30 for hundreds of thousands of miles in Volvo diesel engines which are a VW/Audi motor. I have also ran it in VW rabbit diesels with great results. In the Volvo motors, there was cylinder wall wear as well as ring sticking and valve train wear when a 15w40 dino oil was used. That stopped when the 5w30 Mobil 1 was used. Even on a rebuilt volvo diesel motor there as virtually zero wear when the 5w30 was used. However, I am not sure that I would want to use the same 5w30 M1 in the CRD. The 5w30 indeed does say for gasoline and diesel applications if you read the back of the bottle carefully, but the Turbo Diesel oil you are talkingabout is probably the Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40 oil. I too would love to see what people are seeing with oil samples from a variety of oils. There is a lot of speculation here about what oils to use, but a UOA would certainly help. I am hoping to get one on the 0w40 I am using, but it may not be for a while. |

I live in florida, where the temps run in the 90's almost daily. I wonder if the 5W-30 would still be better for me, or if I'd be better off with the 5W-40 since it is so freakin hot down here. Any thoughts? |

From racing experience with Mazda, the AMSOIL Series 2000 (for gasoline engine) would run a lower engine oil temp than anything else we tried. The "long grain" synthetic oil resisted shearing better that others tried also. I have not had enough time on this oil (Series 3000 Heavy Duty Diesel) to pull any to test yet, but from past experience I am confident the results will be just fine. |

I checked with Amsoil Tech support and they said Series 3000 5w30 HDD ok to use in the CRD Libby if not putting it under high load stress. Else they recommended the Euro 5w40 or the new CJ-4 (DEO) 5w40. I haven't used the 5w30 in my CRD but did use in all last year in my New Holland tractor. It did pretty well even with extreme heat doing a lot of brush hog work. Nice easy starts during the cold weather. It would seem that the 5w30 Series 3000 would be fine for the CRD since a lot of Amsoils own testimonials show it being used in Class 8 trucks. If you can run it in a 14L over the road semi, it should be quite ok for a 2.8L CRD. It seemed that Amsoil tech did not want to fully commit to saying it was ok all the time in the response they sent me. |

The techs at AMSOIL have to tell you to go with 5W-40 because of the owners manual. "Under the table" they will tell you 5W-30 HDD |

If/when I get my silicon levels under control so that I can extend my oil change intervals, I would use this oil. |

So, why exactly is their 5W-30 better than their 5W-40? Is it more resistant to searing? Does it get better fuel mileage? Is there any isntance were the 5W-40 would be better than the 5W-30? |

Higher TBN for one. For the 5w-30 TBN is around 12 which is a good number if you are considering longer oil change intervals. The 5w-30 MAY get you better mileage also, being a thinner oil. The 5w-40 is fine if you are changing oil at 5-6k intervals and is a little thicker, if you're concerned with higher summer temps. |

So 5w30 may be just fine for our CRD's? I was thinking of trying the Mobil 1 5w30 and doing a UOA on it and see how it does in our motors. |

I have ran Mobil 1 5w30 in many Volvo 740 turbo diesels over hundreds of thousands of miles and had no turbo failures, in fact they lasted much longer. I don't think it would hurt the turbo or the motor, but you are right about the warranty issue, that may be affected by it. |

A dealer will look for any excuse to void your warranty. If you're using 5W-30 and have a failure of an oil-lubricated component, guess what they'll say? In that case you better have an oil analysis to back up your position that 5W-30 is OK. I suspect the Amsoil HDD will be OK in our application, but until someone has a UOA on it in our motor, it's all speculation. |
Not really. Our application may require the heavier weight. If you have a turbo failure and they catch you with 30W in there, Cha Ching!!!
Not really. Amsoil's 5w-30 is a far superior oil for our diesels than the 0w-40 Mobil 1 that is recommended by DCX. Other threads have addressed reasons why Chyrsler may have chosen this oil for their recommendation. Amsoil's 5w-30 is one of the oils recommended by them for our CRD's, and Amsoil will stand behind their products and recommendations. As for DCX voiding warranties; I guess anything is possible. It probably depends on what dealer you use. They could theorectically deny your warranty for alot of reasons: at some point a reasonable person would ask themselves "why did I buy a DCX vehicle?" It could turn into a public relations (and sales) nightmare for them. Bottom line; if the manufacturer begins to act unreasonable with respect to warranty coverage, I'll get my next vehicle from someone else. |
