I've been thinking about these - the 3.73 axle is a great ratio for towing - but I don't tow anything
the taller 235/85/16 would kill the ratio about 10% from stock (or 5% from 245/75) - which should help crusing rpm
but at the same time you'd affect the aerodynamics and increase the tire weight you have to turn

so is the net result better or worse mileage?

(if it's no change - I like the additional ground clearance)

There is going to be a change...probably lose a little city and highway. I ran them on my old 2002 KJ and liked them especially with an "E" rating.

Yeah - definitely needs the lift - the 235/85/16 would be right at 32 inches tall vs about 29 inches stock

I do have a lift -

I also have 245/75/16 MTR's and an ARB - none of which help mileage but I mixed the evaluation by putting them all on at the same time. I know the combination lost about 2 mpg but I'm wondering if a 235/85/16 will make it better or worse.

I'm fairly sure a gasser would get worse mileage - because it doesn't have as much low end torque - so it would have to rev higher to start moving. I'm think the CRD might not notice as much and the rpm reduction on cruising would be better (traffic runs at 70-75 - it keeps me just over 2000 rpm - I'd like to be under that.)

I thought a couple of folks had tried the taller tires on a CRD - but I've never heard a mileage report afterwards

I've got them, I'm not so sure about the difference. I know that my spedo is about 10% off. I haven't taken it on a road trip yet. I feel like it takes a little more pedal to get it moving, stop and go kills the mileage. Combined I am about 24, 25.

Moose had them and AFAIK he liked them and they are/were for sale in the sale section. I personally would love to run that size IF I don't end up just going to a SFA. I think I would also persue regearing to 4.10's w/ that tall of a tire to get back some of the lost gearing.
