Post subject:  irregular vibrations at idle

Im having some problems with my CRD.

First of all I think my alternator is bad. When the motor is idling you can hear that the alternator is making some kind of vibration noise. Its worse when you turn on the lights and it gets better when you turn them off. I opened the hood and listened very closely to the alternator, its definitely coming from their..... OR whatever is belt driven and sitts right below it. Sounds like bad bearing to me.

It also likes to vibrate every once in a while for about 2-3 seconds when idling. Its feels like missfiring on a gasser. Does that maybe have anything to do with the alternator?

discontct the battery "hot" lead when its running...

if it stays running your Alt is working; if it dies then well the Alt is dead...

Alternative: if you have a voltmeter, a battery's "normal" voltage when everything is off is around 12.6 volts (not more). When the engine is running and the alternator is working correctly, it is typically 13.6 volts (sometimes a bit more, occasionally a bit less).

But if my alternator would be bad, wouldnt that kill the battery in a very short amount of time? Its been like that for almost a month now.

Its doing it with the AC off too, just not as bad.

I think its only doing it with the AC on. Its really annoying. I thought it would always do that but then I turned the AC on/off.
