I have traded in my 05 CRD LTD. Although I loved the Jeep when it ran well, it spent many days in the shop. When it went in the shop is was usually 3-4 days at a time. Traded in on a new RAV4. I just wanted to say that this is an incredible forum. I haven't seen many other auto forums to compare. I wish all of you many safe miles with your CRD's! |

yeah, good luck with Rav4.. too late but I wish you tried the gas KJ first, but I guess your concern was the mileage. Anyway, new Rav4 looks better, so enjoy your vehicle. |

What issues were you having? My 2005 CRD is rock solid. I haven't had it too long, but there isn't even a squeek or rattle in the thing. |

So people give up way too easy. Don't sweat the small stuff. |

I typically don't worry too much about a vehicle, especially one with mass produced parts like the CRD. Parts are easy to find, and pretty cheap. The engine, from what I've read, is nearly bulletproof. I think VM Motori designed it to be a utility engine, for a generator or something like that. They also make a marine version of it. I would imagine that this little engine has seen a lot more abuse than our Liberty can dish out. Once my warranty runs out, I'll fix any issues that come up myself. If it's a big job that I can't do or don't have the tools to do, I'll enlist some help. I know plenty of guys that twist wrenches. One is a transmission specialist. Another friend of mine worked as a mechanic for Caterpiller. I'm sure he can handle any diesel specific issues I have. I've not had any issues with my CRD. In fact, I've had more issues with my wife's Honda Odyessy. Little things like dash lights burning out, the automatic doors sticking, and such...we have an extended warranty on that vehicle (thanks to it being a certified used Honda), so I let the dealer fix the problems. I'd rather just fix it myself though. Faster, and I know the job is done right, not by some guy who's watching the clock and can't wait to punch out for Miller time. In fact, I have fixed a few issues myself just because it was less of a headache to order the parts online and fix it in the garage than it is to drive to the dealer, arrange for a ride, then arrange for a ride to get back to the dealer, yadda, yadda, yadda. |

While the CRD has some issues-- I don't think people have as many issues with the CRD as they do with DCX. DCX can't keep CRD parts in stock and the dealers do not know how to work on the CRD-- so when the CRD needs a repair-- it is MIA for 3-7 days when it should have been fixed in an afternoon. That is stupid on DCX's part and they need to either commit to diesel in volume in the Jeep/Chrysler lineup or stop fooling with it alltogether. The test market runs are going to ruin their reputation with customers and frustrate dealer service departments to no end. When they finally start going to diesel in big numbers-- the bad support given these limited production runs is going to bite them in the butt and kill their sales/resale value. Did you get the v6 rav4? Those things are evil fast. Not worth a crap offroad or for towing, but evil fast. |

I don't think I've read much about problems that are diesel specific. Maybe a fuel filter leak or something, but even gassers have fuel filters. Most of what I've seen people have issues with are EGR valves (ORM fixes this), torque converter (recall fixes this), and ball joints (recall fixes this). Most other things are just boneheaded service work. Things like not putting enough fluid in the tranny. How is that a defect of the vehicle? It's a defect of the mechanic. DCX might have the most talented folks in the world working for them, but it's the local dealer that makes the difference. I've seen that with motorcycles too. I bought a Buell, which is sold through Harley dealerships. Most Harley service departments don't have a clue as to how to work on a Buell. They don't have half the knowledge the owners do. They are really great bikes. Stone reliable if maintained properly. I think this is the same thing with our CRDs. We know what's best for them and it's not a guy reading a service manual between punching a time clock. If you've got a good service department, then you'll have a good experience with just about any vehicle. If you've got a bad service department, then you're going to struggle, especially with a first year vehicle that will have little tweaks and fixes that need to be implemented. |

Chad, While I agree that the issues with the CRD can be overcome, consider this: The ORM only fixes the EGR for those willing and able to be offroad all the time or be illegal. The transmission recall, if it fixes anything, does so at the cost of detuning the vehicle. The balljoint recall is the second recall for balljoints on this model. The first did not fix the problem... That said, I love my Jeep and plan to keep it, but I can see where it would not suit everyone. Some thought they were buying a finished, fully engineered vehicle rather than a mass produced prototype. Also, you are right, the dealer can make or break any vehicle. |

Good luck otty. The rav4 gets good reviews and I seriously looked at it as an option for myself. Actually, if you're not towing or going off road, it's probably a smarter option. |

| Post subject: | A CRD has a way of finding the right owner? |
There was an interesting comment after somone else sold their CRD along the lines of "we will likely see that CRD again on this site." These vehicles prove they are not for everyone, but they seem to have a way of finding the right owner eventually. We should figure out a way to tell how many original CRD's are still on the site! |
