Hey all, I am new to the forum and in need of some expert advice. Our year old CRD (new Apr '06) WILL NOT start after shut down from a long ride. It was inconsistant for the last month now it's leaving us stuck in last few days tfor some time usually lasting between 10-20 mins. Each start up attempt yields nothing until the 10-20 minutes pass. My thoughts are a clogged EGR. Maybe a MAP issue. Currently my wife is stuck miles away from home and I can't help. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated???? |

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated???? Welcome. Could be one of the above but I would try something simple first like pumping the primer on the fuel filter. |

Well its a long shot, but I would, once it is started, pull the plug on the MAF, which is just off the air filter cover. Since you are not with your wife, it will be hard to tell her how to do it. To unplug the MAF, you pull up on the red tab till it stops, then pull the plug. I would have it running first, then unplug it. Shut off the engine and ensure it starts again. She will get a check engine light, tell her to ignore it. It is either air problem, or a fuel problem, otherwise diesel's will start. Read through the forums reference changing of fuel filters and issues with the flap near the EGR that can go bad and cause issues if it sticks in the shut position. It is the plug in the round tube coming off the top of the air filter box. |

ya know, we never tried that. but that would mean it is fuel starved. I changed the fuel filter after the first incident thinking a bad fuel situation like my TDI once had. but alas, we continue. as I write, she called and got it started once again! but this time, the time span for waiting was a bit longer. More like 25 minutes. I must do at the very least a MAP cleaning and then onto more remedies. Thanks for help!! |

If the problem started after your fuel filter change I would definately think about an air leak issue. Show her how to prime it and see if that works the next time. |

hello Ripster If so, are these EGR's gumming like the MKIV TDI's?? It's a shame at 20K miles we're having intake cleaning issues! But then again the VW does too. Since my last post she is running and going straight home!! But, I will definately kill the MAF ASAP! Thanks to everyone for HELP |

cowcatcher, if the fuel system has an air leak, wouldn't it show during all engine temperatures. ie. cold start/first start of day as opposed to stop and go/hot engine?? I don't know??? Diesels are still rather new to me thanks |

Yes, alas I am the same, hope to be back in the TDI group sometime in 09. Sold the Golf after 3 deer hits and 250,000 really miss the girl. You need to pull the MAF, read the ORM mod, this effectively kills the EGR, but just like the TDI throws a code, but at least the light is off to the side, less obvious and easier to live with. You should not have to clean it yet, but once you get it home, I concur it could easily be an air leak also. |

thanks Loosing prime can be very random. One of the items to watch is that common rail systems have a fuel shut-off valve that is electric controlled and known to fail. If it hangs in the closed position (as when the engine is off) it won't get fuel and won't run. |

thanks I am not an expert either as all of my other diesels root around in the dirt. From reading the experiences of others here though I think it could happen anytime. Again, I think if it started after your filter change that might be a clue. Good luck. |

I've been researching fuel leaks on diesel fuel filter heads today. I found that air leaks in fuel heaters on fuel heads is common in both European and US made diesel vehicles. One cited a Vaxhaul or Astra diesel, with a common air leak in the fuel heater of the fuel head. Same issue on Ford PSD 7.3L IDI diesel, with symptoms ranging from no starts on cold-start, to no start on heat-soak engine, after a brief stop. Both of these were described as "common air leaks in the fuel system" and apparently can occur under different conditions. Looks like we have discovered what other diesel owners have known about for many years. |

dont they have a recirculating system that would eliminate airbubbles? seems pretty archaic to me. |

A recirculating system won't help on a vacuum system with a leak on the supply side. |

I had this problem. I let my jeep sit for 3 days in our sloped driveway. And then tried to start it, and nothing. I towed it into the shop and they told me I'd have to prime in and bleed the air out of the line. And they even showed me how to do it. |

Could it be like the VW TDI and possibly a stuck closed Anti-Shudder valve if the Motori is equipped with one??? Mind you, I theorize without seeing the condition of the intake but I believe the soot and crud build-up from the EGR system, depositing goo and sludge within my intake mani. Any body look inside their manifold lately?? Any thoughts are appreciated, before this VM Motori gets the Italian BOOT!! |

It seems to me that most of the time when there are CRD start/run issues that don't throw cels they are fuel related. I think you have an air leak somewhere in the fuel system. |
