Big camping weekend coming up. Gonna load up the CRD with family, dog, family gear, dog gear, wife's gear ( :? ), tail hitchfull of camp-wood and coolers, and a big ol' tin Gruman canoe up top for white water (wrap it around a rock? pound it straight with a stone). I imagine that I won't be alone.

I heard a lot of folks turn off the OD but I imagine I'll be at 65mph most of the way. Others say to put it in 4 wheel full-time.

Any recs on getting decent mileage from the towing crowd?

Draft the semi's

I dont shift out of OD unless it is shifting in and out a lot by itself.

I bet you dont have too much trouble since you arent pulling a several thousand pound trailer.

I've towed a few cars with a dual axle trailer. I don't take it out of OD unless I'm going up steep inclines or its starting to downshift alot. No 4wd either and I still get 19mpg (per EVIC)

Haven't had real good luck pounding out aluminum canoes that I wrapped around a rock. LOL. Noisy beasts too.

Cluck, scrape BAM...the mating call of the wild Gruman. Definitely NOT a fishing boat.

can't imagine why you would use four-wheel, unless you are starting your canoe trip from a glacier.

a wise man said once, (my dad) "go in two wheel till stuck, four wheel to get unstuck."

..........unless the goal is to get stuck.....(me)

and oh yeah, mating call of the fole boat "whish, swish, tear, riiiiiiiip....."

OK, I'll be the contrarian. There is nothing wrong with running it full time 4-wheel that's why all the top sports sedans are going to it. I have not seen any reliable information here that shows a mileage loss for doing it either. On the other hand, what techTim said is also true once you get into the rough going. Sometimes two wheel is better on the way in and 4 wheel on the way back out.

Don't get behind my Semi!

Once had a jeep that was tailgating me down by Austin, TX one night. I just would knock the cruise down a notch at a time over an extended period. Got down to about 40 mph before they figured out what was going on. They came around me just laughing. I waved and gave a smile.

On a side note. If I or another semi has to hit the brakes, it might not be too pleasant an experience to eat my trailer. I will just feel a thump. You will need a new vehicle. Would hate to have someone come out and pry you out from under the trailer. It is very difficult to see around a semi to stay aware of any upcoming traffic stops or road trash. Also, if I blew a cap off of a tire, it would take off the roof of a Libby. I would just keep right on rolling. Probably wouldn't even be aware I had decapitated your vehicle since I never saw you in my rear view since you were so close to "draft" me.

I realize that your post was done in humor, some moron might just see it as a good option.

Have a great Memorial day! Remember to thank a vet!

I figured that this topic would be a good place to post this question...I was wondering what is the most (past the 5000 lb. rating) anyone has towed and what was it? I know going past the rating isn't recommended, and I am not planning on trying this feat anytime soon but was just curious. From what I have read, it seems that those who tow frequently say that it feels like the Liberty can handle more than the 5,000 lbs. people throw at it.

I'm sure the engine is up to the task, but the short wheelbase of the Liberty will cause you some issues as will the braking.

Tow rating is seldom limited by the powertrain, but by the chassis and brakes. Take the Wrangler with the 4.0L six. It's got the same powertrain as the Grand Cherokee with that engine, but it's only rated to tow a fraction of the weight.
