Is anybody worried about the location of the oil filter??
Talk about a BAD spot..Is there a oil filter relocation kit out there?

I feel the same way as does everybody else, its a very bad spot for a filter. I think the best solution is to get a skid plate for there. My friend has a skid plate on his CRD libbry and it covers that area up perfectly. I plan to get the skid that just does that very soon and some front tow hooks, lol.

Even with the skid plate I wish someone would machine an "elbow" that made the filter more horizontal...like 20% tilt.

If you're going to change mounting - I'd vote for a remote filter location - maybe enough for a bypass - but definitely in a more protected location.

I fab a lot of TJ stuff, I have layed under my libby several hours just looking at it, I have an idea for just an oil filter shroud. When complete I'll post a pic.

Not to change the subject, The daystar 2.5" lift for the CRD what are the part numbers??

Any good CRD manuals out there? besides the one from DCC.. Is there a preferred "tool kit" or" Just in case stuff",,U guys carry in the CRD? I'm new to the diesel.

The Daystar - the 9116 kit
http://www.boulderbars.com/kjproducts.htm

I've got the Factory Service Manual on CD - I think that's the best deal - although you might be able to get them off of ebay now

I generically carry some tools in all vehicles - the only thing I've added for the CRD is PowerService grey (Wallmart) and a fuel filter - both for longer >1 day trips to avoid issues with problem fuel.

Best cure is a skid with good coverage. I have the ASFIR Aluminum Skids and they have excellent coverage. The Tranny/Transfercase skid covers the oil filter, tranny pan and transfercase.

Here is one installed:

Can you still change the oil filter with a minimum of fuss/mess with that installed? My first self change was clean, but I did have to manuver my arms around a bit to prevent sloppiness.

The hole gives access to the drain plug. With a Fumoto Valve it is even easier. You can still reach the oil filter from the side...no matter what you will spill a little from the filter.

I noticed this issue also. Does anyone offer a light duty skid that will protect this area. It's my understanding that the Jeep skids do not. I don't need a heavy duty unit as those offered from vendors like Skid Row since this vehicle will only see light and very limited off-road duty. I have a mod.'d TJ and a lifted Grand if I need anything more.

I chose the ASFIR because it has excellent coverage and it is light. The engine skid...tranny/transfercase skid and fuel skid weight it at less than 80# but give good protection. They also make the underside smoother for airflow IMHO.

For light duty off roading shuch as going hunting or fishing where you might drive fire trail or log trails the OEM skid is fine and will protect the filter and still leave plenty of room to remove the filter. I bought the skids just to protect the underside from truck tire parts on the highway, it was not bought to do off road driving.

Which skid is it that provides this protection. http://www.justforjeeps.com/fueltank.html I beleive I all ready have the front suspension skid. Is it the transmission skid?

You just have to make sure it is CRD specific on some skids...

Would somebody mind to snap and post a few pics of their OEM skids? I'd like to see a shot around the oil filter and from whatever other angles you see fit. ... or if somebody already has, point me to the thread.

I just order me some OEM skids for a few reasons.

1) They are cheap cheap cheap
2) They give protection to the oil filter
3) I don't require REAL skids yet
4) Lighter
5) Available very quickly
6) I live in Canada and shipping would be very expensive and not to mention duty, grrrr

Those are my reasons, my friend has an '06 crd with the skids and they give ample protection for mild off-roading, mainly the oil filter.

Yes the OEM skid that covers the oi;l filter and back half of the engine is the tranny skid. Click on the link below and scrowl down to the 15th picture to see an installed OEM skid plate.
