I paid 19k for mine last summer. it was at a dealer way up in podunk Tennessee. The dealer didn't know what he had there and went way down on the price because it had not sold for a year. The salesman didn't even know that it was a diesel. wish I could find more deals like that! 8)

I paid 26 in November, but had to have it moved in from 200 miles away. But then again I got 0% for 60 and financed another 6 in taxes.

There's a whole little industry up and going now in importing diesel vehicles from Canada (and even directly from Japan). A lot of the folks behind it are bio-diesel enthusiasts. Crazy expensive to do, but if you have the $$ and want a diesel 4x4, might be worth considering.

Unfortunatly its nearly impossible to bring in a car newer than 25 years old into the US.

Canada has similar rules except with vehicles 15 years old.

Because of this recently a huge new influx of cars has been coming into canada.

However for anyone wishing to import a vehicle to the US you face many strict regulations, you need to demostrate that it passes emissions for that year vehicle, passes crash test standards(good luck getting that information from mitsu, and anyone who has invested the money to crash test those vehicles doesnt like to let it go freely as it proprietary.

You may import a vehicle for up to one year for "off road racing and exhibition" purposes. At the end of the one year the vehicle must either be "deported" "dismantled" or "destroyed"

Often test mules of new products meet this fate......nothing hurts you more than seeing a brand new getting crushed in front of your eyes while tens of thousands of dollars in profit are just being compacted into a pancake.

I strongly encourage you to do this research before thinking about importing the car into the US, needless to say you will see the obstacles facing you and become as discouraged as I am. I have spent the last 5 years thinking and pondering on the subject, what it comes down to is that its possible, but requires vaste amounts of money to do so, along the 50-60k range.

I dont know about you guys, but thats more than I have in my bank account.

Hmmm a L200 might be easier to import. Also as it is already in "North America" it could be easier. Could be.

Ah yes importing a car. Ponder this 2004 Ford Focus RS just to get one in the US registered would cost me $170,000. So I am now making a 90% clone to bring in. Well Race car clone.

It is possible to legally import certain vehicles from certain places under the 25 year limit. I imported a 1983 diesel Landcruiser (BJ60) from Canada last year through a registered importer (RI). Probably could have done it myself and saved some $$$ but went with the sure thing instead. Cost around $500.

Toyota will not send the coveted letter certifying that their Canadian spec cruisers meet US emissions and safety standards, which would have made the process a snap. But they do meet the standards, as they are nearly identical to FJ60s, and there are precedents. My RI, a company called Chevrolake, bonded the car to guarantee that it met US specs. I went to the border with my papers, paid the duty, and drove across. Legally titleable in any state. Many people have brought 40- and 60-series 'cruisers into the US this way. Some have brought in the much rarer 70-series. A few have exploited some kind of loophole to import Japanese cruisers to the US which were first imported into Canada. Don't know if that's still possible, though.

If I remember right, imports from Canada must be pre-1990, originally produced for the Canadian market, and with either a letter of compliance or a bond guaranteeing compliance. Don't think Canada had the Hi-Lux in that age range (do they even have them now? not sure...) so that's a no go. At least with the 'yotas I'm pretty sure imports from other locations are more or less out of the question. So no diesel Hi-Luxes  If I could have imported one of those, I might not be here right now.

For that much $ it would be far easier to have a small diesel swapped into an old FJ. Or if you want a full size 4X4 with off road ability just purchase an old full size Chevy Blazer, drop in a diesel.

Some of the parts in those things are specific to the Japan model. Finding parts for 15 year old car is hard enough for stuff that was sold here.
