Prety good little article.

The first part of the article is real "fuel" for those who base thier whole vision of yesterday, today and tomorrow on yesterday. Neither corn nor soybeans are the best crop sources for biofuels, they are simple crops that are widely grown, marginally profitable and expensive to cultivate. Breakthroughs in biofuels will continue to come on the future as we find new crops or naturally occuring organics to press into use. Ultimately, if we continue to demand mobility and increasing energy use we will need to move away from combustibles though.

BioDiesel can be made from a vast amount of resources (alge, chicken and animal waste fats, bean oils, etc.) which makes for a fuel that can add to the resource pool of mainstream fuel usage. Just using it as blending stock can help.
Ethanol as a fuel for source for mainstream use is simply a political hoax, much like carbon credits.

Nice article. Should this be in the new alternative fuels section?

I thought about it, but I figured more people who cared would see it here anyway.

Strangely, Dr. Tillman's main conclusion was left out. While Tillman demonstrated that Celulosic Ethanol (Ethanol from random plant matter)was more efficient than corn ethanol or soy Biodiesel, the most efficient by far was Fischer Trop (FT) Biodiesel (Biodiesel made through a complex gasification and liquification of random plant matter, also called BTL).

Sadly, this is never mentioned in most articles. This FT technology ALREADY exists (since WWII) and is being implemented in Europe. The FT refineries are god-awfully expensive, so government-scale money is needed, but at least the technology is known and extant. Money thrown at Cellulosic Ethanol technology seems kinda a waste when we already have a more efficient random biomass-to-liquid fuel technology. VW, for instance, thinks that plant-oil biodiesel (usually rapeseed in Europe) is a huge waste of time and chastised the governments for not concetrating on FT Biodiesel.

Wanna see a FT plant?:

That's the future, but the future costs money...
