Yesterday I went out and started checking over things on the CRD. It hadn't seen much driving since the return from Texas and getting the front end repaired. I'd just driven it the day before and topped off the tank.
In prep for checking for air in the filter assembly, I gave the primer pump a few strokes. Nada, nothing, absolutely no buildup of pressure. I started expending quite a few words concerning the quality of the filter assembly.
Opening up the vent valve, air would rush out when I pushed the plunger, and immediately be sucked back in when I released it.
I was hoping that it was just some crud from the fuel tank jamming the check valve inside it, and that if I could get some fuel in it and operate it, it might flush it out.
Found a long piece of rubber hose that fit snugly over the vent valve. Apparently I was suffering from CRS at the time and didn't remember I had a vacuum pump and fluid trap readily available, so I just stuck the other end in my mouth and started sucking.
First two tries I got fuel up into the filter (and my mouth), but the pump still didn't want to work. You could hear air and fuel squishing around inside the pump, but otherwise no results.
Third time was the charm, apparently the offending material got flushed thru, and the pump started working normally.
Tack on another reason for adding an electric lift pump to this beast.
Ever get dosed with castor oil as a kid? That's exactly what ULSD tastes like. Took hours to get the taste out of my mouth, and remembered afterwards I'd dosed that tank with a 1/2 oz of biocide.
What was that old joke about suck-starting a Harley?
