Its a long term disaster. Right now Brazil is estimated to be saving 10 million tons of CO2 from the air by burning ethanol. However the land used to grow the sugarcane that is turned into ethanol used to be rainforest which absorbed 16 million tons of CO2 per year. National Geographic had a very good article on this a few months back.

Brazil is energy independant due to huge oil discoveries, not due to ethanol use. These new oil discoveries allow the to continue the use of ethanol as an energy source, but not as a replacement.

"Brazil is set to achieve energy self-sufficiency this year, thanks in large part to its production of heavy oil. Most of its crude oil production is offshore in the Campos, Espírito Santo, and Santos basins in deep and ultra-deep waters, and the majority of oil in these basins is heavy. In fact, heavy oil constitutes nearly one-half of Brazil's proved oil reserves of 13 billion barrels, as the chart below illustrates."

Ya, which is why I said "interesting," I also found the bit about the old fiat interesting as well.

I wonder how much new slash and burn land is used each year compared to how much land is sustainibly reused.

I also wonder how much CO2 is removed each year by the growth of sugar cane.
