Post subject:  Odometer off by 5%

I just took a 1670 mile trip and returned today. Along the way I measured actual miles driven(via highway markers) vs. my odometer reading. I consistantly lost about a mile per twenty driven, making my odometer off by roughly 5%.

Is this an issue that can be corrected at a dealership? Should it be? I find it mildly annoying that it is off like that, I'd have thought they would have that adjusted correctly since technically my warranty will get 1500 extra miles...

I have a 4% difference and my friend with an '06 crd is also out about the same.

The odometer error is pretty common for some reason. Mine is off about 2 %, but the speed is right on. Some have reported that their dealer could correct for this or even different size tires, others have had their dealer flat refuse to address it. As usual, it seems to depend on the dealer. With the error in my favor, I'd let it be.

By GPS is is off by about 4% which means you are getting a bit more warranty coverage and really getting better fuel mileage by about 4% by manual calculation. The Speedo is the opposite...you are really going about 6% slower than indicated.

So 1) more warranty 2) Better than calculated mpg and 3) fewer speeding tickets...this means DC DOES LOVE US!!!

I was off by 6% or a little higher until I went to larger tires then my error changed to 5%. Makes no sense. I prefer that the error read as it does rather than the other way for the purposes of warranty.

I had the car re-programmed at the dealer when I went to 245/70 tires. The change took about 10 mins and cost $ 20 dollars. There are tire size options built into the Jeep's little brain and the computer just has to be told what size you are using. Since the change, my odo/spedo are right on based on gps comparison.

How come speedo is showing 6% faster, while the odometer is losing miles? Jeep is weird......

I went to 245/75/16's and my Speedo virtually dead on (we have the neighborhood radar speed signs)
odometer's off ~5%

Fly by wire! No cables. My speedo was about 2% fast and my odo was about 6.5% slow before the tire change. Now the odo is about 5% slow, not sure about the speedo but it seems to be right on at 25 MPH.

My speedo is 6-7% slow as compared to GPS. I think the odometer is about the same.

I took my Jeep to the dealer for 5% odometer less and speedo 5% fast. The dealer set the pinon factor and still same problem. Bigger tires (30 inch) can correct the speedo problem but will make the odometer worst.

My odo is about 5% lower than reality.
The speedo is about 6% off. Minimum speed for cruise control appears to be 32mph on the speedo, but a police radar sign says I'm doing 30mph.

Speedo error more than 7%

My 200 km trip to the cottage showed only 184 with the Liberty . I have since checked it with GPS and both the speedo and odometre are out by >7%.- in opposite directions
Great for warrenty but even has an effect when calculating MPG.
100 kph true speed shows as 108kph
100kph on the speedo is really 93kph
My tires are standard 225/75-16

Thats why to go to larger tire size (30 inch) and fix speedo and make your warrenty last longer with the odomenter.

Didn't work for me, it went the other way. Don't know why but I got 1.5% closed on the Odo with 245's. I am thinking that running higher pressure in the paper thin tires actually allowed them to get taller than the 245's.

Mine is off by 5-10% also but I think it's closer to 5%. I keep an excel spreadsheet of all my fuel up's since day one when I account for this error it boost my hand calculated mpg by 1.25mpg and puts it within .25mpg of the Evic. But it still only brings my average mpg to 21.01 with a best of 30.0 and a worst of 17.3

No more lead foot for me I guess.
