Mahindra (the tractor company) is going to market a line of pickups and SUV's that are ALL diesel CRD's. Looks like they will be available in '09.

http://www.gv-usa.com/

2.2L CRD, 4WD, 6 speed autos. The claim for mpg is 28-35. 2dr & 4dr pickups and standard and loaded SUV's. Electronic shift transfer cases.

Mahindra drives India. I have several indian friends who adore these vehicles, simple, reliable, cheap. Question is can they meet emissions?

Um, yeah. It'll be a couple decades before they are worth owning, at least judging by the rest of the foreign vehicle imports. Be nice if it kick started diesel, but I just don't see it happening from someone like that.

Don't buy the first model year.....or even the 2nd. 2009 is probably optimistic but they will eventually hit the shores somewhere within 50% of their price point.

A co-worker bough a Yugo when they first came out and now has 45,000 miles on a flower pot in the backyard. Literally, his wife is using it for a pot cause it's all it's worth.

I'll stick with Jeep.

I'll give them at least a test drive before I write them off as a piece of junk :?

Don't cut them short  Yugo's problem was one of service or lack of it. Every car company, including Honda and Toyota, has problems. It's how they handle the problems that will make or brake them  Nothing is better then the service that's provided for it, including our CRD's

Mahindra is a huge (Indian) company centered in the power technology with diversification. If you look at their domestic website, the specifications on these vehicles will probably not appeal to the mainstream US consumer. For instance, while there are upgrades, the "fluff factor" will not be at the level that the US perceives "LX" models should be at (No leather, differential air conditioning, etc.). The engine in this vehicle is a 2.6L with 115 HP (ours is 2.8 with 160 HP) and it comes only with a 5 speed tranny. I would be fine with that but mainstream US consumer will probably not be fine with it. While this company may be getting its feet wet in the US pool, they will probably have to wade deeper to capture a significant market share in the US. Hyundai figured it out. Mahindra probably can too.

Who knows what the cost of a gallon of fuel will be by 2009? By that time, some other companies might also be offering some smaller diesel options also. They could still sell based on the fact that "they are so simple".

I don't see why Mitsubishi and Isuzu aren't doing the same.
Both already have a well established dealer and service network for their
commercial truck lines. Hell, John Deer could do it too but I wouldn't
expect an american manufacturer to smart enough to make it happen..

We export jobs to India and import trucks. Sounds like a fair trade, Huh?

BTW, a lot of JD equipment is made by Mitsu in Japan. Whoda thunk it!

Heck the Compass and Patriot are on the same chassis as the Mitsubishi Lancer Automobile.

I will be interesting to see what the vehicles are really like after they are re-engineered to meet US safety and emission standards. Right now, India has virtually nothing in place for domestic use.

Yeah, i know. Thats why I felt good about buying my wife a Caliber. I was
a Mitsu service tech from '00 to '03. Buisness sucked, almost like being
the maytag repairman.

The Mahindra's that are now being made are outstanding in dependability, but so are the autos with VM Motori's sold overseas. when they slap all the US emissions crap on them I think that we'll see some of the same kinds of problems as we already have with the CRD.

If Miisubishi would just bring the Montero TDI in, I would sell my CRD in a hart beat, and buy one. You don't win all those Dakar Rallys by building junk

Toyota Motor Corp. will cooperate with truckmaker Isuzu Motors Ltd. to develop and produce small diesel engines for the European market, both sides announced Thursday.

The agreement, which seals talks that began last November, will allow Toyota, Japan's top automaker, to take advantage of Isuzu's highly reputed diesel technology.

Production of the 1.6 liter diesel engines for use in Toyota vehicles sold in Europe will start 2012, the companies said in a statement.

Demand for diesel vehicles is growing especially in Europe because of worries about global warming. Diesel is widely known for good mileage, and recent innovations have made diesel cleaner.

Toyota already produces diesel engines in Europe, but it has tended to focus more on so-called hybrid technology, in which a car switches between a gas engine and an electric motor for fuel efficiency.

The agreement allows Toyota to get help from Isuzu to compete in diesel technology with rivals such as Honda Motor Co., which is strengthening its diesel lineup.

Toyota and Isuzu said the companies were working out details on development, production and supply of the diesel engine, but Isuzu "will play the leading role."

Toyota owns a 5.9 percent stake in Isuzu. Isuzu formed a capital alliance with Toyota in November after dissolving its tie-up with General Motors Corp. in April 2006.

When I was a tech, I was sent to the regional Mitsu training center in
Orlando. They had a variety of engines there on stands for training with.
I noticed a few that were diesels. I asked the instructor about them and
he said that those were there for the S. American techs to train with.
