Today I drove up Argentine Peak on Forest Road 2481 North West of Georgetown, CO. A nice close trail for anyone in the Metro area, just make sure you're lifted or have your skids. After a 10 mile crawl/coast back down the peak from the summit (in 1st & 2nd). I noticed I kept smelling exhaust (Driving with windows down of course), I could smell my B20, especially on switchbacks and checked my undercarriage a couple times but hadn't knocked anything loose. and couldn't see I was blowing smoke or anything because of all the dust I was kicking up. It took roughly an hour before I got back onto the Guanella byway, I blew smoke like crazy for a good 1/4 mile up the pass (After I was off the trail). This I noticed in my passenger side mirror, like nothing I'd ever seen the 2.8L do in my life! Not a hard accel or anything and it was about 50 degrees. I thought about turning around and going back to Georgetown but it quickly stopped and everything was fine, I watched my temp gauge the whole time on the trail and it never moved from "normal" I was in and outta full time 4WD and 4hi. Maybe the motor was REALLY cool and needed a moment to warm back up? Any thoughts/ideas?

Any dripping oil? Especially off a turbo seal or hose to the turbo. If oil ran down a hose or got past a seal for a bit and ended up in or on the exhaust, it will smoke real good. Perhaps when it was at an angle?

Steep angles somtime bring oil out from places it has been accumulating. I notice that you don't have a provent or EHM. A lot of oil might have accumulated in your air-ways by now and dribbled into the system during extreme angles and warmed up engine air temps moved older stuff along (intercooler doesn't work as well at low driving speed vs high revs)

To test this theory, I'd use:

1) Park it up on a steep bank (real steep) for a while, then take it for a ride. Do you get the smoke again? (Scanguage the engine air temp)
Or,
2) Clean your CAC and other hoses, install a provent or EHM and try the trail again.

Hopefully that is all it is. However, slightly leaky turbo seals could also behave the same way (or so I am led to believe).

Probably just a heavy amount of soot that built up from you idleing around. Once you got the rpms back up it blew out and all is well.

When I first got my CRD - I drove up to Pike's Peak - on the way down - 11 miles of letting the engine slow me down as much as a diesel will - and only touching the brakes lightly in the corners - I saw lots of white smoke comming out of the exhaust - I pulled off - checked out the engine - let it idle for a few minutes - it cleared up - no problems afterwards.

Here's a better site for the trail info: http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=60 The Pike's Peak thing makes sense I haven't seen any leaking oil or anything. I did another trail up Mt. Bross http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=116 later that afternoon without any problems. So no worries just an weird experience.

Argentine is not much of a trail, saw a Subaru Forrester up there when I did it last.As far as the smoke show BVCRD is right, after a long idle like that the engine was just clearing it's nose, totally normal for a turbo diesel.
