Post subject:  Please Help with Diagnosis

So I had the problem creep up in the last few of weeks. Here are the symptoms.

1. Start crd in morning runs great. Drive off and stop somewhere for 15-45 minutes. Get back in start up, back out of parking spot put it back in drive and take off. However engine runs prettyrough between 1000 and 2000 rpms. Also feels like the power is surging. (This is bad for driving at parking lot speeds) Get out on the road and 20 to 30 seconds later everything is a-ok. If I stop for longer than a hour the engine cools all the way down and I don't seem to have a problem. This is happening almost every day.

2. Start up in the morning and back out of drive way. Put the car in drive and hit accelerator, rpm's raise up but the engine sounds like crap and car only moves a couple of feet. Put car back in park shut off and start up again, same problem. Put car in park shut off for 10 seconds and start up, put it back in drive and take off like nothing ever happened. This has happened 3 times. wtf?

3. The third symptom has only happened once. I started up in the morning and took off everything is running great. About 3 miles from home is a big hill. Once the crd got to the hill it felt like I had no boost. The rpms would go all the way up to 3000 but I had NO POWER at all. I pulled over and turned the car off and waited a few seconds before restarting. Restarted and everything ran great again. :( :(

I first thought it could be a clogged fuel filter so I had the dealership change it at the last oil change. I also tried draining the air out of the fuel filter in case that was the problem.

Now I think it might be a sensor but still no check engine light so...????
I made an appointment for next Tuesday but was wondering if someone had any ideas?

You will get different answers on this but I think it is AIR in the fuel. Check carefully around the fuel filter housing (especially pull the heater plug out and inspect) and also make sure the fuel filter is tight. If it started after the new filter perhaps they didn't lube the "o" ring or left the old "0" ring on to double them up. Some CRD's also had problems with the fuel lines running from the tank and have ade tp replace them. Could also be air leakage at the bleeder valve or the "0" ring between the puck and the filter head (that is the black piece if plastic between the filter and the head where the wires plu in.

doesn't limp home mode set off the check engine light?

There is a real "Limp" mode and there is what we call "Limp" mode. The real one will trigger a CEL, but I found no CEL the time mine suffered this problem. The real limp mode can be caused by a variety of motor or transmission issues and it sticks the tranny in 2nd gear. The rig runs fine but it won't shift. The one we call limp here will give you shaking, high RPM and barely move the CRD far enough off the road to find shelter. Shut it down, let it set a minute or so and after a re-start it will run just fine.

I have a lift pump on order and I think the will cure mine. After experiencing it once I wish not to experience it again.

I see. I'm going to try to drain the air out again. I think the problem we have is that the pump draws the fuel threw the filter not to the pump then to the filter then to the high pressure pump. Stupid design.

Got a call back from the dealership. They ran a ecu software update and the mechanic also said I should go out and drive it hard to clean the soot out of the exhaust. Too much stop and go driving. Picking it up tonight, I'll let you guys know if it makes any difference.

The service manager told me that DM said the pcm update said "improves cold weather and idle preformace". I'll let you guys know if I have any more problems.

Post subject:  no power smoke rough running

I had the same thing on mine. I took it to the dealer and so far they have changed the EGR, the turbo, and now they are going to change the intercooler. Nothing so far has fixed it. I told themI had removed the air filter to see what kind was in there and if it was dirty and that the problem started immediately after I put it back in. If it happened right after I messed with the air filter, wouldn't that be the problem? Seems like too much of a coincidence for it to be anything else.
I have an '06 limited with about 29k on it.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance - I want my crd back....

Check the FCV. easy to do. a clogged or partial clogged FCV will either stop or limit air to intake. with a fully operational EGR you will get soot and crud in there and then it's only a matter of time before it fails. and to be clear, when this happened to me @ 20K, no one CEL or other DTC's showed.

Thanks.
Does anyone know a real diesel mechanic in NY? I don't want a code reader - I can do that. I want a guy who knows engines.

OK. First, is the FCV also the EGR?
Next, here we go.
My dealer had had my CRD for 18 days. They have changed the EGR, the turbo, and the intercooler. They told me yesterday that neither they nor the home office Jeep techs know what to do. It is still running rough and not acceptable.
Any ideas out there? The prognosis is not good at this point.
I have an '06 Limited with app. 29k on it.

Have they checked the injector pump? I had some of the same symptoms (rough running, occasional "limp" and surging) before I had an injection pump failure. From experience the techs replace everything around the symptoms but never get to the pump. I never had a code until the pump puked. There is another guy on the board who had a similar plight.

Muchas gracias.
I will suggest it. They supposedly sent the tech to somewhere to help with it, and they did something today, but I do not know what.
From what I read, these were pretty dependable engines. I have had mine for 1 month, and it has been there for 19 days now. I am beginning to wonder if I made a mistake in getting the CRD......
